Chocolate Blu-ray Disc Review

Chocolate Blu-ray Disc

CHOCOLATE (2008, Blu-ray released November 2, 2010 – MSRP $19.99 CAN)

MOVIE: ★★☆☆☆
VIDEO: ★★★★☆
AUDIO: ★★★★½
EXTRAS: ★½☆☆☆
BLU-RAY: ★★★☆☆

Produced and directed by the same team that brought Ong Bak and Tom yum goong (The Protector) to the screen, Chocolate, at its core a simple gangland vengeance film, is merely a shade of those much finer efforts. For all of the faults of its poorly constructed script, it does, however provide a perfect showcase for the talents of the beautiful and impressive Jeeja Yanin, the breakout star of the film.

Often referred to as the female Tony Jaa, Yanin is not only an incredible talent in the punching and kicking department but also manages to turn in a pretty great performance as Zen, a mentally challenged girl with a gift for the martial arts and a score to settle with the men who’ve been keeping her parents apart. She takes on money lenders and the mob in some of the most incredible action scenes put to film in years. But all the solid performances and brilliantly executed fight sequences can’t save the sloppy plot construction and tepid scripting. Chocolate is quite enjoyable as a showcase for Yanin’s considerable Muay Thai skills but little else.

This new Blu-ray disc from eOne Films appears to match the previously released Magnolia disc in most every regard, save for the studio-specific trailers and the removal of Dolby Digital 5.1 audio tracks. The transfer is solid, highly detailed and exhibits moments of greatness but is outdone by the outright impressive English/Thai DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio sound tracks. The Blu-ray only includes a single extra – the 9-minute long “Making of Chocolate“, which provides a very brief overview of Yanin’s discovery and training for the film.
