I have such a soft spot for fantasy and sci-fi films of the late 70s/early 80s. I don’t doubt that they are responsible for my fascination with the trappings of nerd-dom, from gallivanting space adventures to heroic tales of flying men in capes. I count Clash of the Titans amongst the most influential of those films on my young mind. And I’m so excited to finally have it in my Blu-ray collection, warts and all. …Continued…
The Informant! isn’t your everyday, run of the mill whistle-blower film. Oh no. Director Steven Soderbergh and screenwriter Scott Burns have crafted a masterful, dark comedy from the real-life drama surrounding an insiders attempt to bring down big-business Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) and the ensuing fallout of the investigations and trials. No, really, it’s a comedy. It’s funny! That’s why there’s an exclamation mark! …Continued…
This is a huge release week for me. One of the most important of the year. There’s not a lot hitting the shops today but a couple of films here number amongst my favourites. As always, your clicks matter. If you enjoy this weekly column and want to support it and the site, please make your purchases through our Amazon links. By doing so, you’re directly helping the The Blu-ray Blog stay alive…just like Johnny 5.
I can’t believe I just typed that …Continued…
Another week, another bank-breaker collection of new Blu-ray releases! Thankfully for my pocketbook, while there may be a lot of titles hitting the shops today, there isn’t a lot I feel the need to grab up. As always, we appreciate any Amazon purchase you make through our links. They help to keep this column and the site alive! …Continued…
Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths, an intelligent, well performed, well animated direct-to-video feature, is perhaps the crown jewel in the library of DC Comics’ cartoon movies. It manages to tell a fun little superhero tale packed with action and character in an all-too-brief seventy-five minutes. Yet, as wonderful as it is, it’s almost overshadowed by the sheer bounty of compelling bonus features on the extra-packed Blu-ray disc! …Continued…
Goodfellas is twenty years old? Get the f*$& outta here! There’s no denying that this is one of the finest mob movies, if not one of the finest films that has ever been made. And the new Blu-ray from Warner, celebrates the anniversary with a new silk suit and haircut but, sadly the mobster inside remains the same. Um…by that, I mean that this is the same disc they released three years ago in a new package. …Continued…
Yeah! We’ve finally got some details about Chris Lavis and Maciek Szczerbowski’s animated short Higglety Pigglety Pop! or There Must Be More to Life, which will appear exclusively on the Where The WIld Things Are Blu-ray, to be released on March 2nd (as we reported in our previously article.) You can read the press release for yourself below but if you have any doubt about the skills of these animators just check out their previous film, the Oscar nominated Madame Tutli Putli embedded above for your viewing pleasure (and currently available on both the Animation Express Blu-ray and streaming on the NFB’s HD site). …Continued…
Whiteout is the punching bag of 2009. Very few critics were able to find a kind word or two to write about the film. It sits at the bottom of the list of Rotten Tomatoes 100 worst-reviewed films of the decade after lingering in development hell since 1999 and being buried in the Warner vaults since 2007. But is it really that bad? …Continued…
It’s another Tuesday with another handful of great Blu-ray releases. In the mix this week we’ve got a comic book adaptation, a couple of fantastic PTA fliks and another incredible release from the Criterion Collection. As always, making a purchase through our Amazon links keeps The Blu-ray Blog on its feet and we thank you for every single one! …Continued…
It’s hard to believe that you can refer to any film made in the 90s as a classic. But I think the term holds a lot of water in a handful of cases. Fifteen years on, Michael Mann’s Heat has earned its place in the pantheon of masterfully made action-films. And this new Blu-ray edition of the film is one of the finest ways to celebrate it. …Continued…
Oh boy. I can’t wait for this! Warner Home Video has officially announced the March release of Where the Wild Things Are on Blu-ray! This is another one of those films that escaped me this past year, despite the fact that I’m a massive fan of the original Maurice Sendak book and love the work of director, Spike Jonze. …Continued…
Oh boy. I remember this animated version of Lord of the Rings quite fondly from my youth! This is some amazing, groundbreaking Ralph Bakshi animation. And while the rotoscoping technique isn’t favored by everybody (actors in costume were traced to create the animation) the result has now become a timeless classic. But I didn’t imagine we’d be seeing Lord of the Rings on Blu-ray this soon in the formats life cycle. It’s clearly being released as a compliment to the live-action Peter Jackson films, which hit the shops on the same day, April 6th. Can’t wait to see it again! …Continued…
Did you read my review of the Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone: Ultimate Edition Blu-ray Disc set last week? Well, simply replace a few of the details, add some special features and ramp up the praise by a factor of ten and suddenly you’ve got my review for the Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets: Ultimate Edition Blu-ray Disc set! Could these things possibly get any better?! …Continued…
Oh boy. Here we go. If you’re opposed to reading another gushing tribute to a brilliant Warner Home Video boxed set package, you’d do well to click away from this post! The Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone: Ultimate Edition Blu-ray Disc set is fantastically wonderful in almost every way! And I’m going to sing its praises ’till I can’t sing no more! …Continued…
I shouldn’t be allowed to review these Harry Potter films. I’ve lost all objectivity. From the moment the first frames of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince burst from my home theatre projector and onto my screen I was lost in the film. If it’s anything but a perfect movie, I’m completely unaware. …Continued…
I’m a day late getting my Blu-ray picks posted. Sorry ’bout that. Yesterday was pretty packed with news and with the limited time I had, I could only squeeze so many posts in. But here we are now, a little light on titles overall but with some quality Blu-ray discs nonetheless. Guess which boxed set I’m most excited about this week… …Continued…
We’ve told you all you need to know about the upcoming Lord of the Rings Blu-ray boxed set. But just in case you need a video to sell you on the high-def upgrade, take a gander at Warner Home Video’s new Lord of the Rings Blu-ray trailer! …Continued…
Don’t toy with my emotions here, Warner! I’m telling you, I can’t take any more teasing. We first reported on the Lord of the Rings Blu-ray set last June, when it was set for a November release. Then we ran down the full Blu-ray disc details of the set. But all the while, the studio remained mum, refusing to confirm the release date. Then came word that the set had been pushed back to 2010. And that word was confirmed by Warner. And Christmas was ruined forever. …Continued…
This ain’t your parents’ Terminator! I’m not even sure it’s your Terminator. This fourth film in the franchise, Terminator Salvation comes to us from a new production team, new director and new actors playing all new characters. It’s a game changer, that’s for sure. But is this new direction a change for the better? …Continued…
I’m at a loss for words when it comes to HBO’s brilliant series Rome. I’m overwhelmed with both sadness and awe when I watch these episodes: the latter for the sheer epic wonder that is the series and the former because it’s a television show lost before its time. Thank heaven and HBO then for this incredible Blu-ray collection that honours the series in the best possible way! …Continued…
