UPDATED: Paramount brings Saving Private Ryan, Escape from L.A. and K-19: The Widowmaker to Blu-ray

Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers have become a single entity in my mind. I have a hard time recalling what events, what story-points are covered in which film/show. Both the film and the series have the same creative teams at their core and feel very similar, from the way they were shot to the music behind them. That being said, I’m a big fan of both. And very excited to tell you about Paramount’s upcoming Sapphire Series release of Saving Private Ryan, timed to be released just days before V-E day. …Continued…

[VIDEO] Toy Story and Toy Story 2 Blu-ray Trailer

Here’s a nice new trailer trumpeting the March release of both Toy Story and Toy Story 2 on Blu-ray. As awesome as this news is, March is all about the Blu-ray release of Ponyo for me. Until I get my Miyazaki fix, it’s going to be kind of difficult to get excited about anything else! …Continued…

Toy Story 1 and 2 Coming to Blu-ray in March

This is great news! Disney Pixar will be releasing Blu-ray editions of Toy Story 1 and 2 in concert with the theatrical release of Toy Story 3! These films should look spectacular in high-def, as they’ll be transfered to disc directly from the digital files. This is the one case where the age of the film won’t directly effect the quality of the disc. …Continued…

Angels and Demons Blu-ray Disc Review

I shouldn’t like Angels and Demons. I’m not a fan of novelist Dan Brown, I didn’t particularly enjoy the original film, The DaVinci Code and I absolutely loathe the work of screenwriter Akiva Goldsman (remember Batman and Robin?) And yet, this new film proves to be such a breathtaking and engrossing thrill-ride, it made me forget almost all of my reservations! …Continued…

Blu-ray Picks for the Week of December 1

A day late and still a copy of Terminator Salvation short. The Blu-ray Blog was up and down yesterday, thanks to a flood of traffic from Blu-ray fan and celebrity gossip hound, www.egotastic.com, so it wasn’t possible to get our weekly release list online. Here we are a day later with a collection of titles not quite as numerous as previous weeks but quite vital all the same. …Continued…

Forrest Gump Blu-ray Disc Review

Paramount’s Sapphire Series line of Blu-ray discs lives up to its promise with the release of Best Picture Oscar winner Forrest Gump – a beautiful, well realized, perfectly film-like disc sporting a plethora of special features. …Continued…

Blu-ray Picks for the Week of November 24

It’s another wallet-killer this week, folks! Between these pre-holiday releases and the incredible Black Friday deals on offer at the moment our poor bank accounts don’t stand a fighting chance. …Continued…

Gladiator Blu-ray Disc Review

Holy crap, this Gladiator Blu-ray nonsense has been burning up the internets for the last couple of weeks! Have you heard it? If you believe the hype, you’ll be suffering under the delusion that this disc is the foulest thing to ever ship to your local Best Buy. That it’s damn-near unwatchable. That you might as well just stick with your old DVD copy of the film. Well, I’m here to tell you to ignore the noise and the naysayers. The Gladiator Blu-ray is a truly great, complete and thoroughly enjoyable package…that probably could have had a better transfer. But hell, nobody’s perfect, right? …Continued…

Forrest Gump Blu-ray Details

Life is like a box of chocolates, apparently. Um…I never quite got that. Along with Gladiator and Braveheart, Forrest Gump rounds out the initial offering of Paramount’s new Sapphire series of Blu-ray discs. What does that label mean? I have no idea. But as long as they keep churning them out, I’ll keep buying. …Continued…

Paramount Sapphire Series Blu-ray Discs Announced: Gladiator, Braveheart, Forest Gump

We read the rumours. We dreamed about them. We hoped they would come before the end of the year. And now Paramount has confirmed its exclusive new “Sapphire Series” series of deluxe Blu-ray discs, kicking off with the September 1st release of Gladiator and Braveheart, followed by Forest Gump on November 3rd.

I’m grateful that we’re getting these fliks on Blu-ray at long last (well, I guess the wait hasn’t been THAT long. Blu-ray is only 3 years old!) But this whole “Sapphire Series” thing stinks of marketing department. I don’t believe for a moment that the quality of these discs – the A/V, the bonus stuff -is any better, is prepared with more love than Paramount gives to their Transformers or Iron Man discs.

Whatever. I could care less. Slap whatever label you want on the packages. Just gimme the movies.

Here are the details of Gladiator and Braveheart. We’ll know more about the Gump later in the summer. …Continued…
