Criterion July Blu-ray titles: Beauty and the Beast, Naked, High and Low, The Music Room, Life During Wartime and Leon Morin, Priest

What a way to end the work week! Criterion have announced their July slate of new Blu-ray discs and once again, it’s a knockout. I’m particularly excited about seeing Cocteau’s dreamy Beauty and the Beast in HD, though I fear it might look softer, hazier than I would hope. The thought of getting my grubby little mitts on Satyajit Ray’s The Music Room is also getting my blood pumping, as it looks to be one of the most feature-rich discs in the bunch (check out all of those extras!) I’m feeling a little guilty about the lack of enthusiasm I’m feeling for Todd Solondz’ Life During Wartime. I really, really want to be all fired about this, his newest flik but I feel like his style has just worn away at me over the years. I loved Happiness once upon a time but can’t bare to sit through it now. Ah well, I’m willing to give Wartime a shot if the good folks at Criterion deem it worthy. …Continued…

My love affair with The Criterion Collection will continue, unabated into March, as the label issues another incredible slate of films on Blu-ray! This batch includes a further round of older spine-numbers (previously issued titles on DVD) like Louis Malle’s Au revoir les enfants and Edward Yang’s Yi Yi as well as films new to the Collection such as Mike Leigh’s Topsy-Turvy and the film adaptation of the Gilbert & Sullivan stage play it dramatizes, The Mikado.
