Top 5 New Blu-ray releases for the Week of October 5

This is it! This is the big one in a week full of amazing releases. William Friedkin‘s The Exorcist, an adaptation of William Peter Blatty‘s novel of the same name, was one of the most terrifying films of the seventies and remains so today. This new Blu-ray editiion features both the original 1973 cut of the film and the updated 2000 extended director’s cut of the film. …Continuned…

Last of the Mohicans Blu-ray announced and detailed

Fox is just killing it these days, what with their Alien Anthology boxed set, Sound of Music, Rocky Horror and Moulin Rouge Blu-ray announcements. And to me, the October release of Michael Mann’s Last of the Mohicans is the icing on the cake. A lot of us have been waiting with bated breath for this film on Blu, expecting a glorious, detailed HD transfer that will take advantage of the amazing Dante Spinotti photography. And while the announced list of special features won’t light the Blu-ray fanboy world on fire, a great looking transfer will. Don’t let us down, Fox! …Continued…

Last of the Mohicans, Moulin Rouge Blu-ray Confirmed, Alien Anthology Details, More from Fox

Holy crap! Fox hit the afterburners and broke the sound barrier with all their new announcements yesterday. As part of their year long 75th Anniversary celebration, the studio is going to be bringing some of their most critically acclaimed catalogue titles to Blu-ray (and DVD, of course.) They’ve provided a first sneak peek at what they’ve got in store for us later on in 2010: …Continued…

Top 5 New Blu-ray releases for the Week of March 30

I would say this is an “underwhelming” week but that I truly love the top two films on my list. It’s just that beyond that, the pickin’s get a little slim, unless you’re into b-grade horror, kids fliks or anime. There aren’t really any surprises hidden here, so if you don’t see anything you like after a quick perusal, I’d recommend hitting up the Amazon sale lists. …Continued…

Collateral Blu-ray Disc Review

Three coyotes, a Foxx and a scary silver-fox get the HD treatment in the Blu-ray release of Collateral – a 2004 thriller where a mostly spineless cabbie (Jamie Foxx) picks up a dangerous fare (Tom Cruise) whose poofy, silvery-grey hair used to prove nearly as distracting to the audience as the digital video the film was shot on. A lot has changed since 2004 and while our eyes have since become accustomed to HD Cam footage, Cruise still looks wrong sporting a grey coif. …Continued…

Heat Blu-ray Disc Review

It’s hard to believe that you can refer to any film made in the 90s as a classic. But I think the term holds a lot of water in a handful of cases. Fifteen years on, Michael Mann’s Heat has earned its place in the pantheon of masterfully made action-films. And this new Blu-ray edition of the film is one of the finest ways to celebrate it. …Continued…

Blu-ray Picks for the Week of December 8

Oh, what a weird day today! Was awakened at 5AM by bad porch kitten, iPhone died around 7AM, almost choked on a Cinnamon Streusel Mini-Wheat at 9AM, now I’m left exhausted, out-of-touch and coughing, to wade through this weeks new Blu-ray releases. Thankfully, there aren’t a lot of quality discs out today (there is a whole pile of crap, direct to video kind of stuff I’ll just ignore) but the discs worth noting are most certainly worth rushing out to pick up. …Continued…

Blu-ray Picks for the Week of November 10

I wasn’t going to do these weekly pick articles anymore. Every site has got one now. And it just seemed like this was the least interesting or original thing I could offer. And then my good buddy, editor of the popular celebrity gossip site Egotastic.com, bought himself a Blu-ray player (it’s about time!) After pressing me for details on the best Blu-ray discs he could pick up to show off his very impressive new home theatre system (60″ Pioneer Kuro! So Jealous!!!) he asked if I still publish a weekly list of new releases. Umm… …Continued…

The Hannibal Lecter Collection Blu-ray Disc Review

Lecter or Lektor? Hopkins or Cox? Whatever flavour of brilliant man-eating sociopath you prefer, The Hannibal Lecter Collection Blu-ray set delivers. However, while often as tasty as some fava beans and a nice chianti, this meal isn’t quite as filling as it could be. Um…and by that I mean the box set is missing a bunch of stuff, like Red Dragon and bonus content. …Continued…

Michael Mann Recuts Heat for Blu-ray Release, Full Disc details

Looks like director Michael Mann has taken the old hatchet to his popular film, Heat. We’ve just received the final list of bonus features for the upcoming Blu-ray edition of the film and it notes “New Content Changes Supervised by Director Michael Mann”. Now, what these changes might entail has yet to be revealed. What we can tell you is that the original running time of the film was 171 minutes (the original DVD release was listed at 172 minutes), whereas the Blu-ray seems to clock in at 170. Yep. That’s about it for now. Check out the art for the back of the package below: …Continued…
