Top 5 New Blu-ray releases for the Week of December 14

What a tough week! On first glance, it didn’t seem to me that there was a whole lot hitting the shops but then, when I began to assemble the TOP 5 list, I quickly discovered otherwise. There’s some great stuff here, including a couple of films that my girlfriend has claimed are the best movies she’s seen all year and a whole lot of amazing catalogue releases including the first ever North American Hammer Films release in HD! …Continued…

Clash of the Titans (2010) Blu-ray Disc Review

When I first caught wind of an update to the classic Clash of the Titans film heading to the big screen my first impulse was to decry the effort, feeling that nothing could possibly live up to the original. Then I took a step back, recalled that Harryhausen had just re-purposed Greek myth to best suit the stop-motion animation effects and creatures he wanted to design back in the day, and realized that this new version of the tale would be doing the exact same thing, only to modern standards. Suddenly I was filled with hope, imagining what a fresh coat of paint could bring to an old B-Movie standard. Sadly, I’ve come away from the exercise not with renewed faith for the imaginative powers of Hollywood creatives but only certain that they are in desperate need of a lesson in restraint. …Continued…

Top 5 New Blu-ray releases for the Week of May 4

This might not be the biggest, most overwhelming release week of the year but there are a couple Blu-ray discs here that any serious collection simply can’t be without. And everything else this week somehow seems lesser as a result. That’s not to say the other films aren’t worth watching but when you’ve got two behemoths of cinema vying for your attention as these discs are, it’s tough to validate giving their competitors even the slightest regard. But then again, there’s Snake Plissken on Blu-ray. What’s a nerd to do? …Continued…

2010 Clash of the Titans Remake on Blu-ray in July with Green Lantern movie Sneak Peek

Isn’t Clash of the Titans still playing in theatres? It really feels like these films are moving too quickly from the big-screen to the home-screen these days, doesn’t it? To tell you the truth though, in most cases, I’d just as soon watch them in my living room anymore. And it looks like I’ll get a chance to see this remake of Clash when it hits Blu-ray on July 27th, complete with a preview for next summers DC Comics superhero film, Green Lantern starring Ryan Reynolds! …Continued…

Universal bringing Flash Gordon and Darkman to Blu-ray

Stone’s head must be exploding right about now! You see, he’s such an over-the-top fan of the 1980 Flash Gordon film that his bachelor party consisted of renting out the Montreal Dollar Cinema for a private screening (along with Road House and some big screen Rock Band action…yeah, it was pretty awesome!) And now, to see that Universal is about to unleash Flash in all his cheesy, 80s glory onto Blu-ray disc…well, friends, I’d say that Stone is probably having a pretty good day today. Aside from his exploding head and all. Oh yeah, and Sam Raimi’s pretty-decent Spiderman-warm-up film, Darkman also hits Blu on the same day, June 15th. It’s going to be a pretty good day… …Continued…

UPDATED: Paramount brings Saving Private Ryan, Escape from L.A. and K-19: The Widowmaker to Blu-ray

Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers have become a single entity in my mind. I have a hard time recalling what events, what story-points are covered in which film/show. Both the film and the series have the same creative teams at their core and feel very similar, from the way they were shot to the music behind them. That being said, I’m a big fan of both. And very excited to tell you about Paramount’s upcoming Sapphire Series release of Saving Private Ryan, timed to be released just days before V-E day. …Continued…
