Criterion announces September Blu-ray titles: The Thin Red Line, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, Breathless, Charade

God help me but I’m going to be completely broke by the end of this year if this keeps up. I’m sorry to sing the same song over and over again but Criterion proves month after month that they can read my mind, choosing some of my favourite films to bring to Blu-ray. And this batch of announcements, all due out this coming September is no exception. From Godard to Malick, Donen to Oshima – these are all incredible movies and I need to own them all on Blu-ray! Details below: …Continued…

More Criterion Titles go Out Of Print, including The Man Who Fell To Earth Blu-ray

When I read the notice from Criterion, posted on their blog yesterday morning, that another chunk of their collection of films is about to go Out Of Print (O.O.P. as we home video enthusiasts refer to it) I damn near shed a tear. …Continued…

Top 5 New Blu-ray releases for the Week of April 20

Remember how I had trouble getting inspired to pick up one of last weeks new Blu-ray releases? Well, let me tell you, that’s so far from being an issue this week. There’s actually just way, way too many quality discs coming out over the next few days, from a couple of new Criterion releases, an Oscar winner and the biggest box office blockbuster of 2009. This is a going to hurt my wallet something fierce. …Continued…

Top 5 New Blu-ray releases for the Week of February 16

Oh geez. I can’t afford this. Nobody can afford this. This is an inordinate amount of awesomeness for one week. Three Criterion discs, three classics from Studio Canal, a Scorsese, an anime anthology, Audrey Tautou and faux-vintage blaxploitation. How’s a guy supposed to pick a top five out of all this greatness?! Sigh…I’m going to cheat, that’s how. …Continued…

[VIDEO] Studio Canal Collection Blu-ray Trailer

Here’s a great little promotional trailer for Studio Canal’s new line of deluxe Blu-ray releases. Those of you lamenting the loss of some of these titles from the Criterion Collection will want to pay close attention here. There are a few titles like Godard’s Breathless and Renais’ Last Year at Marienbad, currently still licensed to Criterion which will clearly be the next DVD and Blu-ray discs on the chopping block. …Continued…

The Criterion Collection loses rights to films, Pierrot Le Fou Blu-ray to go Out Of Print OOP

This is a sad, sad day. The Criterion Collection has announced that they have lost the right to publish a significant group of their titles. I’m aghast. From the sounds of things, all of these titles will now be a part of the Studio Canal/Lionsgate deal which has recently brought us the less-than-spectacular Blu-ray release of Akira Kurosawa’s Ran. You might remember that Criterion was just about to release Ran on Blu-ray when the earlier part of this deal yanked the carpet out from under them. It’s so depressing to know that a superior transfer exists but until the current Studio Canal disc goes Out Of Print we’ll never see it. …Continued…

Fritz Lang's M Blu-ray Detailed

It was almost exactly a month ago that we told you all about Masters of Cinema’s upcoming slate of Blu-ray releases, including Fritz Lang’s M. But at that time, we didn’t have any details to share. Well, here they are! And the disc looks amazing! The special features don’t duplicate Criterion’s DVD release at all (all new commentary tracks and documentaries!) so hold onto those editions if you’ve got them. Remember, however, that these MOC releases are UK only for the time being, so if you live on the same side of the Atlantic as me, you’ll have to import from Amazon.co.uk or the like, if you want them for yourself. Details below: …Continued…

Lionsgate Announces Studio Canal Collection: Ran, The Ladykillers, Contempt on Blu-ray

How can Blu-ray news be so amazing yet so damned tragic all at the same time? I’ll tell you how – when a bunch of films you love get announced for Blu-ray but not in the editions you were hoping and praying for. Case in point – the Studio Canal Collection distributed in North America by Lionsgate. …Continued…

New Masters of Cinema Blu-ray Announcements: Lang’s M, Murnau's City Girl, Godard's Une Femme Mariée

It’s days like these that make me wish I was living back in the UK. The brilliant Masters of Cinema label have just announced their first three Blu-ray titles of 2010 – Fritz Lang’s M, F.W. Murnau’s City Girl and Jean-Luc Godard’s Une Femme Mariée. We’ve got package art for all three and details for two of the titles. Still waiting to find out what’s going to be on the M disc. If the incredible MOC edition of Murnau’s Sunrise is any indication, we’re in for a real treat with this next batch of releases. Guess I better put my ordering finger to work on Amazon.co.uk. I’ve got me some importing to do! …Continued…
