Apocalypse Now, Hearts of Darkness doc coming to Blu-ray in October

This has got to be some of the most exciting Blu-ray news so far this year. And that’s really saying something in a year jam-packed with incredible news and releases on the format! Lionsgate and American Zoetrope, Francis Ford Coppola’s film studio, have announced a multi-year home entertainment distribution agreement which will see them bringing his acclaimed film Apocalypse Now to Blu-ray this October. Even more exciting, as far as I’m concerned, is that this deal will cover the eventual release of Coppola’s The Conversation, a film I consider to be his finest and one of my all-time favourites from any director. …Continued…

Top 5 New Blu-ray releases for the Week of May 4

This might not be the biggest, most overwhelming release week of the year but there are a couple Blu-ray discs here that any serious collection simply can’t be without. And everything else this week somehow seems lesser as a result. That’s not to say the other films aren’t worth watching but when you’ve got two behemoths of cinema vying for your attention as these discs are, it’s tough to validate giving their competitors even the slightest regard. But then again, there’s Snake Plissken on Blu-ray. What’s a nerd to do? …Continued…

The Godfather: Part II Blu-ray Disc Review

I have strong feelings about The Godfather: Part II and I’m not sure where to start talking about them.

First, I guess I want to address the popular opinion that it’s a better film than its predecessor. It is not. It is inferior in many ways; the story is at times confusing and unnecessarily convoluted for the sake of adding ‘intrigue’; the characters behave insincerely, their actions often in service to the movement of the plot rather than their own hearts, and the ending is weak and unsatisfying. …Continued…

The Godfather Blu-ray Disc Review

You don’t need me to review the story of The Godfather for you. Chances are, you’ve seen it and you already know that it’s Francis Ford Coppola’s masterpiece and arguably one of the best films ever made. The last scene of the film is one of my favourite movie endings of all time, and it still gives me chills after countless viewings. …Continued…

[VIDEO] A&E's Pride and Prejudice Blu-ray Restoration Process

I just watched the restoration feature on the Godfather Blu-ray. Man, I love this stuff. Robert A. Harris is my hero. This guy goes above and beyond the call of duty to bring films back from the dead. If you’re not reading his regular column Yellow Layer Failure over at the best home video site on the planet, The Digital Bits, you might as well give up your high-def gear and go back to the land of 480i. And watching him in action on the Godfather disc, after reading about his efforts to restore films for so many years was a satisfying experience. And his work speaks for itself. The Godfather films look magnificent.

And A&E’s Pride and Prejudice, while not a project of Mr. Harris, looks to be in good qualified hands, if this little chunk of the Blu-ray’s restoration doc is any indication. I’ve read good things about the quality of this transfer. Seeing as how I’ll probably never see the Pride and Prejudice and Zombies edition of the film that I’ve been longing for, I might have to break down and pick this one up soon. …Continued…

Top 8 Blu-ray Discs to get Dad for Father's Day

Father’s day is creeping up on us pretty quickly here and, I don’t know about you, but I always have a tough time buying for the old man. So, I thought this year I’d do us all a favour and put together a list of some of the movies that my dad loves, to assist in the gift-hunting frenzy that will no doubt be the coming week. …Continued…
