Oh man, this is non-Criterion news that just happens to read like a Criterion Collection title announcement (in fact, a number of these films have actually had a Criterion DVD release in years past but have since fallen out of print.) Early pre-orders posted on Amazon.ca indicate that MGM plans to release 6 of their finest films on Blu-ray this coming January 24, 2012, including three early Hitchcock films (Rebecca, Notorious, Spellbound), Billy Wilder‘s The Apartment, John Schlesinger‘s Midnight Cowboy and Woody Allen‘s signature film, Annie Hall. …Continued…

Rise of the Planet of the Apes Blu-ray coming in December

Rupert Wyatt’s reboot of the Planet of the Apes franchise is absolutely brilliant and, hands down, the best adventure film of the blockbuster summer season. And from the look of the announcement from Fox, the Blu-ray edition of the film should be a worthy release, at least in as much as the special features are concerned. There’s a ton of them here, from multiple commentary tracks to deleted scenes and featurettes. Hell, there’s even a doc about Andy Serkis! Rise of the Planet of the Apes will be on store shelves December 13th in the US and Canada and December 7th internationally. …Continued…
