Criterion previews 2012 release schedule – Spartacus, Satyricon, Canterbury Tales and many more

Well, will you look at that. Criterion has posted a pic on their Facebook page, offering something of a preview of their 2012 slate of releases. All right, to be fair, they didn’t really frame the image as a “preview“, more a look behind the scenes at the desk of someone juggling potential releases for next year. …Continued…

[VIDEO] Three Reasons: Amarcord – The Criterion Collection

For those who don’t already own Federico Fellini‘s Amarcord on DVD this new Blu-ray edition should be a blind-buy. You won’t regret it. Those with the DVD already in your collection will find this a beautiful upgrade, with richer colours and more detail. Gone are the digital artifacts of standard-def, replaced here with a beautiful film-like grain structure. The original Italian audio is presented in a full, resonant lossless track. Special features are carried over from the previous DVD edition and are, as you’d expect from Criterion, fantastic. …Continued…

Top 5 New Blu-ray releases for the Week of February 8

Weeks like this kind of tear me up inside. You see, I’m often torn between whether to present a Top 5 list that represents my personal feelings about the Blu-ray discs being released or whether to outline the most popular new titles of the week. I know…first-world problems. …Continued…

Oh geez. I usually like to pick a top disc release every week. I usually like to be able to recommend a single title for you to pick up, you know, if you’ve got a tight budget, or just want to see the best of the best. But I can’t really do it this week. There are too many brilliant Blu-ray discs out this week! I’ll highlight a few of them but please comb through the whole list. There’s something for everyone here! …Continued…

New Criterion Blu-ray Announcements: Che, 8 1/2 and Paris, Texas

Holy crap! I think Christmas just came early. This new batch of Criterion titles, just announced for release in January 2010, includes one of the finest films ever made and is the first title from my list of Top 10 Criterion DVDs that deserve a Blu-ray upgrade to graduate to high-def! And that film is Fellini’s brilliant 8 1/2 (clocking in at #6 on my list!) On any other day, the announcement of Soderbergh’s epic Che and Wenders‘ Paris, Texas on Blu-ray would, alone be great cause for celebration. But 8 1/2 coming to Blu eclipses just about any other news you’re going to hear this month! …Continued…
