Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs Blu-ray Disc Review

I took one look at the lack-luster design work of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and wrote it off as uninspired pablum. Boy, was I wrong! This is one of the most genuinely entertaining animated films of 2009! And my niece and nephew are here in another video review to tell you all about it! …Continued…

District 9 Blu-ray Disc Review

This was a shock. I really wasn’t expecting to enjoy District 9 as much as I did. Honestly, I think it was one of the best films of 2009. And, without question, it’s one of the finest Blu-ray discs available! …Continued…

Monsters Inc. Blu-ray Disc Review

Everywhere you look, everyone is talking about Disney Pixar’s Up, newly released to home video this past week. But there’s another film from the same studio and the same creative team that’s also now available on Blu-ray and it’s equally as incredible. Monsters Inc. is not only every bit as well crafted a film as Up but also just as well put together on Blu-ray disc! …Continued…

Up Blu-ray Disc Review

Disney Pixar’s latest opus, Up premiered in cinemas this past summer, projected several stories high on the big screen, sporting the latest in razzle-dazzle digital 3D optics to sell it to a Hollywood-weary audience. Now, thanks to the glory of the high-def Blu-ray disc, Up has made its way into our home theatres but in only two-dimensions. Does the film suffer because of the “limitations” of current home-video technologies. Heck no! In fact, it might prove to be a better all around experience! …Continued…

IMAX: Dinosaurs Alive! Blu-ray Disc Review

Who doesn’t love a giant IMAX film? One of the thrills of hitting up a museum or science centre is often getting the opportunity to chill out, after a day of exploring old bones and ancient pottery, by relaxing into a soft IMAX theatre chair and enjoying a big-screen science-related documentary. Dinosaurs Alive!, one such film, is now on Blu-ray disc and, while heavier on the paleontology than CGI thunder-lizards, will most likely not disappoint the young dino-enthusiast in the family. …Continued…

Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure Blu-ray Disc Review

Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure is the direct-to-video sequel to the popular fairy-grrrl original of last year - a movie that re-imagined Peter Pan’s mute pixie pal as a short-tempered, mechanically adept and quite verbose little sprite who chums around with her gang of winged gal-pals. Like ‘Bratz’ with wings! These are films made to entertain little girls and to create a new franchise for Disney to exploit so I wasn’t expecting to get much out of this sequel beyond a sales pitch for toys. Imagine my surprise when I actually enjoyed the film! …Continued…

God of War III Playstation 3 game demo included on District 9 Blu-ray

When we posted the details for the District 9 Blu-ray disc a couple of weeks ago, we had no idea that it would include a demo of the upcoming God of War III PS3 videogame! The combinination of PS3 videogame and Hollywood film is an industry first for Blu-ray in North America and a pretty exciting development, if you ask me. …Continued…

[Video] Wish List - Reboot on Blu-ray

I loved this show! Being a Canadian, I may have a special point of pride with this Canadian made show. It has pop culture references galore, all sorts of computer jokes, it’s action packed AND smart and the evolution of it’s animation quality is fun to watch. …Continued..

District 9 coming to Blu-ray in December

I just saw this trailer for the first time a few nights ago, when screening my review copy of Blood: The Last Vampire from Sony. Wow. I’m really sorry I missed the Peter Jackson produced, Neill Blomkamp directed District 9 when it was in theatres and I’m really looking forward to December 29th, the day it hits home video. Details of the release below: …Continued…

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: 25th Anniversary Collector’s Edition Blu-ray Disc Review

I watched four Ninja Turtle films in less than two days. Six of approximately thirty-six hours of last weekend given over to karate-men in suits with animatronic faces (well, to be purely honest, eighty-seven of those minutes were CGI animation….but, well y’know…) I’m not sure any review I could give this Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Film Collection Blu-ray box would be fair or sane under those circumstances. But I’m about to give fairness and sanity a good old college try here. …Continued…

Disney Pixar’s Up Announced and Detailed for Blu-ray (UPDATED)

I’m gutted that I didn’t get to see Up in the theatres. Thank the good lord and the folks at Disney for having the foresight to get it to me on Blu-ray as quickly as possible! While I’ll be happy to own the film on its own, those of you who need a little more collectable for your buck can grab the the disc in a limited edition ‘Up: Luxo Jr. Collectible Desk Lamp Set’ which comes with a replica Luxo Jr. desk lamp with storage base. Apparently you can store all your Pixar Blu-ray discs in it, if you’re so inclined. …Continued…

Star Wars: The Clone Wars The Complete Season One package art, details, release date confirmed

All right. You know what? It’s late. I’m tired. And there’s not much more to say about the Clone Wars except that I’m damn excited to have this press release from Lucasfilm and Warner confirming all the details for the upcoming release of The Complete Season One box set. So let’s just skip the commentary and jump right into the good stuff… …Continued…

Blu-ray Announcement Round-up: Monsters vs. Aliens, MASH, Silverado, The Quick and the Dead, Rudo y Cursi, More

I can’t keep up with the massive amount of release news that hits on a weekly basis. And quite often, I just don’t really care about the titles being announced and therefore have a tough time forcing myself to make time to post about them.

Sigh…

So, I’m going to try to do one of these “Round-Up” posts once a week or so to give you a look at some of the other films coming to Blu-ray. I actually really like most of these films here, in today’s list. Just don’t have the time to give them all individual posts. And in some cases, the studio has yet to give us all the information about the Blu-ray disc.

Let’s get off to the races, then. Title news and announcements follow: …Continued…

Star Wars: The Clone Wars Season One Blu-ray Box details emerge

We’ve known for some time now that Lucasfilm was planning a boxed-set of the first season episodes for release on Blu-ray (they’ve been releasing random collections of episodes on DVD), most likely hitting store shelves sometime this fall. And now, thanks to a scooper on the forums of Blu-ray.com we’ve got our first look at what we can expect from the set.

He notes that the discs will include: …Continued…

[VIDEO] Blu-ray Wish List: Star Trek Animation Nerdgasm

I want to see this in high-def, on my giant front projection screen. I want J.J. Abrams to watch this and go, “Holy shit! This needs to be a bonus feature on our Star Trek Blu-ray disc” I think it can happen. If we all close our eyes and pray to Kahless the Unforgettable, our nerd wish (read: MY nerd wish) may just come true! …Continued…

Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen To Get Shifting Aspect Ratios and Longer Cut on Blu-ray?

I’m not trying to stir up shit here. This just seems like common sense to me. Though it’s not even in cinemas yet, all signs are pointing to the eventual Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen Blu-ray release getting The Dark Knight treatment: aspect ratios that shift between 1.78:1 and 2.4:1 to approximate the theatrical experience of watching the film in IMAX. Michael Bay, outspoken Blu-ray enthusiast, shot four scenes with an IMAX camera and rendered the CGI robots in 4K resolution - a first for this style of special effect - to take advantage of the stupidly large 53ft tall screen. According to the director, those high-res scenes play longer in the IMAX cut of the film, shafting those poor souls who only experience the 35mm version out of a further few minutes of manic robot action. It only stands to reason that this cut will be the director’s preferred version to appear on Blu-ray as well, shifting IMAX ratios intact, no doubt shafting DVD purchasers out of the extended cut as well.

Michael Bay posted this statement on his official forum Sunday night: …Continued…
