Looks like July is going to be a pretty light month. Criterion have announced their latest slate of Blu-ray discs and, surprisingly, they number only four, with a single title new to the collection. …Continued…
These are some of my favourite films of all time. If you’ve read this blog for a while, this won’t come as any surprise to you. I had the pleasure of seeing the newest Ghibli film, The Secret World of Arrietty a few weeks back before it left the first run cinemas here in Montreal, and now the city is smack dab in the middle of a festival of Miyazaki movies! In fact, I just watched Castle in the Sky on the big screen in a fairly clean, quite impressive 35mm print! Bliss. Can’t wait to see how brilliant these upcoming Blu-ray presentations look. All three new discs will be on store shelves on May 22nd. …Continued…
I almost hate to say it, but this latest animated series from Marvel is better than most of their multi-million dollar feature films. The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes does just about everything right, taking its time to introduce each and every character (which is saying something as the series features just about every hero and villain from the Marvel universe!) but not squandering any opportunity to throw them straight into action. …Continued…
I can’t tell you how much I adored the Blu-ray release of the first season of Louie. It wasn’t just the show itself, which, it almost goes without saying at this point, is an absolute work of genius. I also fell head over heels for the discs because of the absolutely stellar commentary tracks, one for each episode, found on the set. Fox has announced the June 19th Blu-ray release of the second season of the series and, though they have yet to detail the extras, I’m praying we’ll be graced with more of Louie C.K.’s extremely candid and informative commentaries. I’ll be picking this one either way. …Continued…
Holy crap. Was Vincent Cassel ever this young? Watching the latest of Criterion’s Three Reasons videos, which pimps their upcoming May 8th release of Mathieu Kassovitz’ 1995 La Haine, reminds me that it’s been around 16 years since I first laid eyes on the film and Cassel. I’m sure I also looked a lot less like a tired but very famous older man married to Monica Bellucci back then but damn, it’s hard to believe this is the same actor I’ve recently watched in A Dangerous Method and Mesrine. I can’t wait to revisit La Haine and angry, young Cassel on Blu in a few weeks’ time. …Continued…
Well, this has been a long time coming. We’ve been hearing buzz about Universal’s work on the Jaws Blu-ray release for just about a year now and finally, this week, the studio has unveiled the details of the disc, along with an 8-minute long video that describes the restoration process the film has undergone in its transition to HD video. …Continued…
