Conan The Barbarian coming to Blu-ray

I don’t think I’m alone in feeling that Arnold Schwarzenegger was born to play Conan. It’s the film role that began his trajectory to super-stardom and it’s the performance that remains, to this day, his most convincing. I kind of feel bad for skinny little Jason Momoa who fills the Governator’s mighty shoes in the upcoming remake of Conan The Barbarian, hitting screens later this summer. He’s going to have to put on about 100 pounds of pure muscle and an Austrian accent to convince me that the meaning of life is “To crush your enemies — See them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women!” And I just don’t see that happening.

Timed to coincide with the release of the new film, Universal will be unleashing the original, brilliant John Milius epic in its extended form (along with its poorly conceived and executed non-Milius sequel) on Blu-ray, replete with all the features from the previously available DVD. I’m curious to see the new picture-in-picture feature that will be included on the Blu, as well as this “Never Before Seen Footage” incorporated into the already existing extended cut of the film. I’m also curious to see if Universal steps up the quality of their catalogue transfers for this release. We’ll know for sure when the disc hits shops on August 2nd!

  1. “I don’t think I’m alone in feeling that Arnold Schwarzenegger was born to play Conan.”

No, you aren’t alone in that viewpoint, considering the thousands of Arnold fans who seem to think Conan was invented in 1982.

“I kind of feel bad for skinny little Jason Momoa who fills the Governator’s mighty shoes in the upcoming remake of Conan The Barbarian, hitting screens later this summer.”

It’s hilarious you think he’s “skinny” and “little,” considering he’s 6’5″ and well over 200lbs. The only thing Arnold has over Jason, physically, is sheer physique.

“He’s going to have to put on about 100 pounds of pure muscle and an Austrian accent to convince me that the meaning of life is “To crush your enemies — See them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women!” And I just don’t see that happening. ”

Good news for you, I guess, since that line (and that accent) won’t be in the film. Nor should it, since this isn’t a remake: it’s a new film featuring a character created in 1932.
