She’s Out of My League Blu-ray Disc Review

SHE’S OUT OF MY LEAGUE (2010, Blu-ray released June 22, 2010 – MSRP $39.99)

She's Out of My League Blu-ray DiscLocal-guy-does-well, Jay Baruchel stars in She’s Out of My League, which begs the question: Can a 5 ever really get a 10? Can the nervous, awkward, sensitive and somewhat endearing guy get the hot girl? Well, this is fiction, but I was out with friends recently and noticed that this actually happens. These guys are usually very smiley.

Jay plays Kirk, an unlucky everyday guy trying to make his way in the often-confusing world of relationships. The object of his desire is Molly, played by Alice Eve. She is smart, adventurous and very beautiful. She is what Kirk always believed was beyond him…but what the heck. What would happen…?

This is a light comedy where people will undoubtedly be able to relate to the Kirk character in some way. It’s handled well in the film. Kirk is never ridiculously Hollywood-unlucky or goofy…except maybe when it comes to his family. What a bunch they are. They’re an unsupportive lot that would rather spend time with his ex, than with him.

In his corner, Kirk has three buddies, all of whom have varying degrees of success with women. They offer advice and guidance. Guys are usually not much help in this department I find, but it generally leads to funny and memorable moments. Of course, some of the old conventions are present, such as an uncomfortable sequence involving bodily fluids and the overly protective dog.

The transfer is clean and clear. No real wow factor here, but it is free of artifacts. The 1080p image is sharp with plenty of visible details in the backgrounds and on various textured surfaces. The colours are bright and consistent. The contrasts are good, with blacks appearing deep, but never blanking out detail.

The disc sports a DTS-HD MA 5.1 surround track that delivers clear dialogue through the centre channel as well as a full and surprisingly enveloping sound field.

This Blu-ray is a little light on bonus features. Included are deleted scenes, a blooper reel, straightforward director commentary and a feature called Devon’s Dating Show, where characters Devon (Kirk’s married friend) and Dylan (Kirk’s idiot brother) educate us about the tricks of successful dating.

Overall, She’s Out of My League is enjoyable even though I have never been a huge fan of this type of film. They always remind us of how shallow people can be, or how hard it can be to believe in yourself or to just go for it sometimes. You’ve got nothing to lose. See it with that special girl or guy.
