Welcome to the first week of The Blu-ray Blog‘s recommended picks! Every week, I’ll be scouring through the upcoming release lists and uncovering the discs I feel are the best and most worthy of your time and rental/purchase. All titles and images are clickable and will zap you over to the corresponding Amazon page which will provide you with a lot more detail about the title and the opportunity to purchase it. WEEK OF DECEMBER 9TH
THE DARK KNIGHT (2 DISC + DIGITAL COPY) (2008)
Need I say more? This is the big-daddy of Blu-ray releases for 2008 – the disc that is supposed to MAKE the format. The studios are counting on it to sell players, set-tops and PS3s through the holiday season and beyond. It’s been out in the wild for a while now thanks to unscrupulous and greedy retailers, eBay-ers and torrent sites. If all the early reviews are accurate, this is, in fact the must-own Blu-ray disc of the year.
Also available:
THE DARK KNIGHT: LIMTED EDITION WITH BATPOD
LOST: THE COMPLETE FOURTH SEASON
They got me back. I didn’t think they could do it, but season 4 of Lost pulled me back in. Kept me interested. Kept me wanting more. And goddamn if I wasn’t disappointed when it was over. With a compelling, mysterious plot, gorgeous, lush visuals and a bevy of extras, fans of the series should rush out and grab this box-set.
Sin City looked like a million-bucks on DVD. That was years ago, when I was young and innocent. She still looks great upconverted in that old SD dress but colour me green-screened if she wasn’t meant to be lavished in 1080p High-Def! I’m still not convinced that this is a domestic release but the price seems right at $29.
”Finally, Asian cinema sees the birth of a movie with the grandeur ― in both budget and inspiration ― of epic franchises like The Lord of the Rings.” – The Korea Times
John Woo has returned with a vengeance! The reviews unanimously praise his return to form with Red Cliff, the most expensive Asian-financed film to date. Since this release is the Hong Kong Version, it’s no doubt the first half of the 2-part cut of the film which is said to have a final run-time over 4hrs. We may see a 2 1/2hr version in cinemas early in the new year. In the meantime, grab this English subtitled import from Amazon. It’s region free and will play in any Blu-ray player.
ANIMATION SPOTLIGHT
GUNBUSTER VS. DIEBUSTER: AIM FOR THE TOP – THE GATTAI
This is a really long and silly title. I’m not exactly sure what it means beyond the fact that this set contains the condensed movie versions of both Gunbuster and Diebuster anime series. I recommend this set based on my love of the first mini-series from the 80′s and reviews I’ve read praising the high-def transfers and bonus materials in the box. This is really something I’d LOVE to get my hands on. My nephew, on the other hand really fell in love with…
I didn’t see it. Not sure if I ever will. He’s 8 and he thought it was fantastic. That’s all I need to know.
NEXT WEEK:
Mamma Mia, Traitor, Burn After Reading, The Third Man (Criterion), Chungking Express (Criterion), Bottle Rocket (Criterion), Planet Terror, Deathproof and MORE!!
