The Big Lebowski coming to Blu-ray in August

Amazon.ca has spilled the beans that we can expect Universal to release the Coen brothers’ 1998 film The Big Lebowski on Blu-ray this coming August 16th. No details are yet available but it’s clear from the image of the included art that the disc will come packaged in a hardcover digi-book. …Continued…

Conan The Barbarian coming to Blu-ray

I don’t think I’m alone in feeling that Arnold Schwarzenegger was born to play Conan. It’s the film role that began his trajectory to super-stardom and it’s the performance that remains, to this day, his most convincing. I kind of feel bad for skinny little Jason Momoa who fills the Governator’s mighty shoes in the upcoming remake of Conan The Barbarian, hitting screens later this summer. He’s going to have to put on about 100 pounds of pure muscle and an Austrian accent to convince me that the meaning of life is “To crush your enemies — See them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women!” And I just don’t see that happening. …Continued…

Universal bringing bare-bones edition of Gilliam’s Brazil to Blu-ray

Universal will be bringing Terry Gilliam‘s brilliant, surrealist social commentary Brazil to Blu-ray this coming July 12th. That’s right. Universal, not Criterion. Need I say more? Sigh. …Continued…

[UPDATED] Ridley Scott’s Legend coming to Blu-ray, available for pre-order

I don’t know if I should be excited or upset about this but it looks like Universal is planning on releasing Ridley Scott‘s visually arresting, narrative-challenged 1985 film, Legend on Blu-ray. Amazon has posted a listing for the disc as well as the (truly garish, floating-heads) cover art, which you can see below, claiming that it will be released on May 31st. No further details are available and the studio hasn’t made a peep about the disc as yet, which doesn’t bode well for the transfer, if you ask me. …Continued…

Scarface coming to Blu-ray in September

I’ve never been a fan of Brain De Palma‘s Scarface but hold it in the highest regard for what it offered cinema at the time and pop culture through the decade that followed. Hell, without Scarface we never would have had Miami Vice! I can hardly imagine a world without Crockett, Tubbs and the music of Jan Hammer. Universal has announced it’s plan to bring the seminal ’80s film to Blu-ray this September 6th in a couple of limited editions, a steelbook package that includes the original 1932 film and one quite pricey version that includes “an elegantly hand-crafted Scarface-themed humidor” that clocks in at almost a grand! That’s a lot of chedda’! Details below: …Continued…

Stanley Kubrick Limited Edition Collection 10-Disc Blu-ray boxed set, A Clockwork Orange 40th Anniversary Edition announced

Warner Home Video has announced a brand new 10-disc Stanley Kubrick Limited Edition Collection Blu-ray set for release on May 31st, which will include the director’s classics, Barry Lyndon and Lolita – two films previously unavailable on the format. This is both amazing and crappy news for Kubrick fans and collectors. Amazing because we’ve all been waiting for these two films to make their debut on Blu. Extremely crappy news because neither film will be available outside of the 10-disc collection, forcing fans to re-purchase all the Kubrick Blu-ray discs if they want to complete their collection. …Continued…

Criterion April Blu-ray titles: Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Blow Out, Le Cercle Rouge, more

From the looks of things, The Criterion Collection will be gracing us with another brilliant slate of Blu-ray discs come April. I’m particularly excited about upgrading my DVD copy of Terry Gilliam‘s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, because, as I feared over a year ago, Universal‘s Blu-ray release of the film just didn’t cut the mustard. I’m expecting great things from this new director approved transfer! Oh yeah, and Blow Out in HD! And more Melville! And Ken Loach! …Continued…

Top 5 New Blu-ray releases for the Week of October 26

You know it’s a massive week of important Blu-ray releases when there are two new titles from Criterion and neither is in the number one position on our Top 5 list! Shocking! We’ve had some big weeks lately but this might just be the most incredible one of all. Hope you’ve been saving up. …Continued…

[VIDEO] Scott Pilgrim vs. The World Blu-ray Trailer

I can hardly believe it but I’ll finally get to watch Scott Pilgrim vs. The World in just over a couple of weeks! It sure has been a long time coming for this writer who managed to miss every single opportunity to see it in the theatre over the last few months since its release. Thankfully, the Blu-ray hits shops on November 9th and I can’t hardly wait! …Continued…
