Ha! Amazing! Criterion hinted back in August that they might be inducting the original 1954 Gojira into the collection in the near future but honestly, I didn’t think we’d see it released on Blu-ray this soon. In addition to the Japanese edition of the film, the January release of Godzilla will also include the 1956 American “reworking” of the film that starred Raymond Burr and was re-titled Godzilla, King of the Monsters. This is gold for fans of the man-in-suit franchise like myself, to find both beloved versions of the film in one package! Amazing. …Continued..

The Informant! isn’t your everyday, run of the mill whistle-blower film. Oh no. Director Steven Soderbergh and screenwriter Scott Burns have crafted a masterful, dark comedy from the real-life drama surrounding an insiders attempt to bring down big-business Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) and the ensuing fallout of the investigations and trials. No, really, it’s a comedy. It’s funny! That’s why there’s an exclamation mark! …Continued…

I wasn’t prepared for the sheer awesomeness of Che. I honestly didn’t think Steven Soderbergh had it in him. But by the time I had finished viewing Part 1 of the film, I was convinced. This is some of his best work and some of the best cinema of 2009! …Continued…
Holy crap! I think Christmas just came early. This new batch of Criterion titles, just announced for release in January 2010, includes one of the finest films ever made and is the first title from my list of Top 10 Criterion DVDs that deserve a Blu-ray upgrade to graduate to high-def! And that film is Fellini’s brilliant 8 1/2 (clocking in at #6 on my list!) On any other day, the announcement of Soderbergh’s epic Che and Wenders‘ Paris, Texas on Blu-ray would, alone be great cause for celebration. But 8 1/2 coming to Blu eclipses just about any other news you’re going to hear this month! …Continued…
This is amazing news! According to Screen Daily, Criterion has recently inked a deal with IFC to bring a whole whack of films to Blu-ray. The first in the deal was the already announced Gomorrah, hitting shelves on November 24th (full details here). This will be followed by Arnaud Desplechin’s A Christmas Tale and, rumour has it, Steven Soderbergh’s two-part biopic Che in December. And from the sounds of it, this is just the beginning! 2010 will see the following titles hit Blu-ray through Criterion: …Continued…
