This week’s new Blu-ray releases include ‘LA JETÉE/SANS SOLEIL’, ‘LADY AND THE TRAMP’, ‘LOVE STORY’, ‘THE HOUR’, ‘THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA AT THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL’, ‘DOWNTON ABBEY: SEASON 2′, ‘THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN – PART 1′ and many, many more!
It’s not quite the Universal Monsters version of the story that I fell in love with as a child, but Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical version of the Phantom of the Opera does hold some limited appeal to monster fans like me. And this new Blu-ray presentation of the 25th Anniversary concert of the popular show is bound to please not only devout fans of the musical but also the most critical of home video fanatic. …Continued…
I’m not a big fan of musicals and I’m definitely not a fan of filmed stage performances but I generally make an exception for anything based on my favourite Universal Horror franchises. While not a translation of Lon Chaney‘s famous 1925 Phantom of the Opera (making its way to Blu on November 1st!) Andrew Lloyd Webber‘s musical adaptation of Gaston Leroux‘s novel retains enough of of what I love about the story to still provide some thrills. That and I kind of grew up on the music. So colour me surprised that the stage version will be released on Blu-ray on November 14th! …Continued…
Lord knows, I don’t really care for musical theatre. As a result, I’ve kept my distance from the Fox TV show, Glee, despite it being a favorite of others in my home. As much as it’s not my bag, I can’t deny the success of the show (which, from what little I’ve seen, seems to be a pretty slick production, worthy of all this attention it’s getting) which will, no doubt, spill over to home video sales when the Complete First Season hits Blu-ray and DVD on September 14th. What a huge release week filled with amazing titles! Sadly, I haven’t gotten my hands on a single Blu-ray disc yet so I can’t out-and-out recommend any of them from personal experience. But if I had to put my money on any one of these titles being a spectacular and worthwhile purchase, I’d have to bet on The Wizard of Oz: 70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector’s Edition. …Continued…
Well, this is a welcome surprise. I mean I was aware that work was being done on a Wizard of Oz Blu-ray release. I just didn’t expect to see it so soon and presented in such grandeur. It appears that Warner has broken the bank on Oz once again, going back to the film’s negatives for an all-new, high definition master, scanned at 8K resolution!
And not only is The Wizard of Oz: 70th Anniversary Edition going to sport one of the finest transfers in home video, but it also looks to offer a truly impressive package of bonus features. The studio has ported over most of the old DVD extras and added more than 4 hours worth of new material. Details: …Continued…
