I’ll always think of Robert Wise as the guy who made sci-fi classics like The Day the Earth Stood Still, The Andromeda Strain and the first, and most ponderously slow, Star Trek film. Most others remember the late director for his hit musicals The Sound of Music and West Side Story. Fox gave us their near-perfect, five-star Blu-ray edition of the former last year and this year, they and MGM will bring us a 50th Anniversary Edition of the latter. …Continued…
This is great news but it should be even greater than it already is. Fox/MGM have announced that they will release a Coen brothers Blu-ray collection in August. That news got me pretty stoked. Then I saw the titles that will be in the boxed set – Blood Simple, Raising Arizona, Miller’s Crossing and Fargo. That’s four awesome movies right there. But honestly, it should be five. Fox also owns the rights to Barton Fink and I’m not quite sure why they the Blu-ray collection doesn’t include it. …Continued…
There’s no question about it, John Frankenheimer‘s 1962 cynical cold war film, The Manchurian Candidate is an unadulterated masterpiece on every level. And Fox/MGM‘s new Blu-ray disc treatment of the film does it justice in just about every way. …Continued…
Norman Jewison’s 1971 film version of Fiddler on the Roof is a remarkable achievement as both an adaptation of a popular stage play as well as a triumph of production design and photography. It provides another reason to be thankful for our favourite optical disc-based HD medium. Fiddler is beautiful on Blu! …Continued…
This weeks new Blu-ray releases include ‘THE ILLUSIONIST’ from Sony, ‘SOMETHING WILD’ from Criterion, ‘THE MISFITS’, ‘SOME LIKE IT HOT’ and ‘THE HORSE SOLDIERS’ from Fox/MGM, ‘BLUE VALENTINE’ from The Weinstein Company and Anchor Bay, ‘I SAW THE DEVIL’ from Magnolia and many, many more!
We’re only a few weeks away from the May 24th Blu-ray debut of Oliver Stone’s Platoon and MovieWeb have nabbed May 24th an exclusive trailer. I’ve embedded it above for your viewing pleasure and, if you can make it past the insufferably long ad they’ve crammed at the beginning (before the Blu-ray ad, that is), you’ll find it a nice little teaser for the Blu-ray/DVD combo pack. …Continued…
I’m not sure if MGM and Fox have decided to release this new, remastered Blu-ray edition of Oliver Stone’s Platoon in honour of the film’s 25th Anniversary or to recognize Memorial Day or simply to take advantage of all the heat surrounding Charlie Sheen at the moment. Whatever the reason, I’ll be happy to add the disc to my collection, if it sports a transfer worthy of the film itself. It’ll be in stores on May 24th. …Continued…
Dances with Wolves is one of those films that kept passing me by through the years, no matter the effort I would put forth to catch it on the big screen or on TV. Thankfully, the new Fox/MGM 20th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray ended up at my door a few days ago, leaving no further excuse. And despite having to give over a fair portion of my Saturday to the film, it was well worth the wait. …Continued…
Sometimes a little snippet of news creeps onto the interwebs from out of nowhere and absolutely makes my day. Today, Bleeding Cool confirmed, via an interview with director David Lynch on KCRW (and dugpa.com) that we will, in fact see a new Blu-ray edition of Blue Velvet soon and that it will contain some of the long lost deleted scenes from the film! Consider my day made. …Continued…
It’s not a particularly overwhelming week in terms of sheer numbers of discs hitting the shops but damn, are there ever some amazing new titles coming out today, including a Blu-ray that could potentially be one of the best releases of the year! You read that right, it’s only the second week of 2011 and we may already have one of the best Blu-ray discs of the year on our hands. And it’s not even from Criterion!! …Continued…
