The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus Blu-ray Disc Review

Regular readers will know of my deep affection for the work of Terry Gilliam. As a fan, I’ve found it difficult to see the talented auteur struggle with challenging and ultimately unsuccessful films like Tideland or his infamously tragic, failed production of The Man Who Killed Don Quixote. I can report now, with great pleasure, that the man has returned to form with his most recent effort, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus – a film doomed to fail yet pulled from the fire by a brilliant last-minute re-imagining of the central character. …Continued…

Top 5 New Blu-ray releases for the Week of April 27

If I had the power to name this week, I think I would have to dub it “The Mighty Catalogue Release Week”…or something like that. I mean, there are a couple of major new releases this week but my god, there are a ton of amazing older titles hitting shelves today. It’s tough to be interested in a new title when so many of my favourite oldies are hitting Blu today. But to be truthful here, there isn’t really a clunker in this list. Including the discs that didn’t make my top 5. They’re all worth a look!

But if I had to put them in order of preference, to pick a Top 5, this is what I’d end up with: …Continued…

Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland Announced for Blu-ray

It’s only been a month and a bit since Tim Burton’s latest twisted nightmare-on-film, Alice in Wonderland, hit the cinemas and it’s already announced for release on Blu-ray! This is a highly controversial move, which pissed off a lot of exhibitors. But you know what? By the time this disc comes out in June, there will already have been so many massive summer blockbusters taking over the big screen (Iron Man 2, Robin Hood, Shrek Forever After, Sex and the City 2, etc.) that Alice would have clearly ended up being lost in the muddle anyway. Better to get in onto Blu as soon as possible before the marketing loses steam altogether, right? …Continued…

Top 5 New Blu-ray releases for the Week of April 13

How does this even happen?! How do the studios deliver so many incredible weeks of amazing releases in a row, only to wind up with this anemic offering? Sheesh. I have to admit, aside from my number one pic there isn’t much I’m excited about this week. I’ll probably use my purchase dollars to pick up something from weeks past that I’ve missed out on…like The Lord of the Rings Trilogy or Red Cliff. …Continued…

Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus on Blu-ray

I’m an unabashed fan of Terry Gilliam’s work. I count Brazil amongst my all time favourite films. While I didn’t think The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus was his best work, I did really enjoy it and am pleased to tell you that you’ll be able to get your hands on a Blu-ray copy of the film very, very soon. From the looks of things, however, it will be available in Canada, the US and the UK at different times, from different studios. I’ve got the info for Lionsgate’s UK release and Sony’s US version but the Canadian Blu-ray, which I’m assuming will come from E1 Films has yet to be announced at all. We will, of course, update this post when we know more. UK and US details below: …Continued…

Blu-ray Picks for the Week of February 2

Okay, this is just ridiculous. I can’t afford all of these discs in one week! I had no idea that February would be such a big release month. I thought March was going to be my bank-breaker and that I’d have another month to save up for the big titles but this week is going to make me reevaluate. …Continued…

Blu-ray Picks for the Week of December 8

Oh, what a weird day today! Was awakened at 5AM by bad porch kitten, iPhone died around 7AM, almost choked on a Cinnamon Streusel Mini-Wheat at 9AM, now I’m left exhausted, out-of-touch and coughing, to wade through this weeks new Blu-ray releases. Thankfully, there aren’t a lot of quality discs out today (there is a whole pile of crap, direct to video kind of stuff I’ll just ignore) but the discs worth noting are most certainly worth rushing out to pick up. …Continued…

Universal brings Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas to Blu-ray

All right, Universal. Just because you’re issuing a Blu-ray edition of Terry Gilliam’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas doesn’t mean you can make me give up my Criterion DVD of the film. Your new disc will no doubt eclipse the DVD in every aspect of the films presentation (and if you use the same master as the UFA German Blu-ray release, you’ll have a real winner on your hands!) But without those Criterion supplements, any Blu-ray version of Fear and Lathing will never really feel complete. It’s worth hanging onto the DVD for the Hunter S. Thompson commentary track alone, never mind the bounty of additional supplemental content! If I were you, Universal, I’d either renew Criterion’s license to the title, or release the Blu-ray in a package fit to store the DVDs along side their new high-def counterpart. Sigh…A fan can dream. Release details below… …Continued…
