Top 5 New Blu-ray releases for the Week of November 23

This is an amazing week for Blu-ray – not only in that there are a handful of pretty amazing new releases (and some duds) to grab up but that there are more deals to be had this week on titles and players than at any time of the year, thanks to the incredible BLACK FRIDAY sales in the USA. The Expendables coming to Blu-ray

Here’s another apparent cinematic gem I missed out on from this past summer. The Expendables is something of an 80s party, featuring almost every action hero from that decade kicking ass and taking names. Word on the street is that writer/director/star Sylvester Stallone was hard at work on a director’s cut of the film, to be included on the Blu-ray upon its eventual release but there doesn’t appear to be a hint of it here. I guess we can expect a double dip of this title in the future. …Continued…

The Ultimate Force of Four Blu-ray Box set (Hero, Iron Monkey, The Legend of Drunken Master, Zatoichi) Review

When the Ultimate Force of Four Blu-ray set arrived at my door, I was already familiar with two of the films – Zhang Yimou’s gorgeous 2002 opus, Hero and Jackie Chan’s astounding The Legend of Drunken Master, originally released in China as Drunken Master II in 1994, edited and released in North America in 2000. I wasn’t expecting much from Iron Monkey and wasn’t sure what Zatoichi would be like. I can happily say, after spending hours with the set over the last few days, that all four of these films are gems. What an amazing surprise! I just wish I had been half as enamoured with their presentation on Blu-ray disc. …Continued…
