Blu-ray Picks for the Week of November 24

It’s another wallet-killer this week, folks! Between these pre-holiday releases and the incredible Black Friday Blu-ray deals on offer at the moment our poor bank accounts don’t stand a fighting chance.

This is a pretty strong group of titles this week. But after watching the review screener, I’d have to recommend heading straight out to pick up a copy of Angels and Demons. I’ll get my full review up as soon as I can but let me tell you in brief how shocked I was with this film. Not because of the subject matter. I was more surprised that I actually really enjoyed watching it! I’m far from a fan of screenwriter/hack Akiva Goldsman but man, he and director Ron Howard really delivered this time. And the Blu-ray disc looks like a million bucks too! Great work and a really great Blu-ray package.

Also take note, there’s a new Criterion release this week. I didn’t get a review copy but I will be heading out to pick up the Gomorrah Blu-ray disc as soon as I get a free moment. You’ll do the same, if you’re even the slightest bit a cinephile. Gomorrah is the best mafia film made this decade!

Speaking of the mob, Tony Soprano and family are back on Blu! Season One of The Sopranos is finally available in high-def and should be on everyone’s gift list. The disc set doesn’t feature any new or updated content but the high-def upgrade makes the Blu-ray version worth every penny!

Just like the video says, we’re going to be seeing Ghost in the Shell 2.0 on Blu-ray and in stores October 26th. Unless the video is wrong and Amazon is correct. In which case, we’ll be seeing it on November 24th. Pay close attention to the newly created CGI footage that director Mamoru Oshii has cut into the film. I’m not sure if it blends. If it works. But it looks pretty slick!

Oh, wow! This is exciting. It seems that director Mamoru Oshii has reworked/remastered a bunch of scenes for his original film Ghost in the Shell, which is to see re-release on November 24 in a new 2.0 version, along with Blood: The Last Vampire on Blu-ray. I was never a huge fan of either of these films but concede that they are both visual feasts. Cool design. Great animation. Flawed scripts. Perhaps the 250 scenes-worth of reworked story and image will make me reevaluate my take on Ghost in the Shell. Check out the ads for both discs:

If you loved Mamoru Oshii‘s anime classic Ghost in the Shell, you’ll no doubt have to order a copy of his latest hit, The Sky Crawlers when it comes to Blu-ray February 25, 2009. HMV Japan lists the film in two versions, the simpler of which will no doubt make it to our shores in due time. For the fan who must have it all, however, brace yourself for sleepless nights of cinematic exploration as you delve into the 3 bonus discs and a plethora of video and printed extras contained within the nifty little metal flight-case. Oh yeah, there’s also a little toy plane. Cute.

No word on English dubs or subs yet. Stay tuned…
