Blood Simple Blu-ray Disc Review

It’s hard to believe the Coen Brothers have been making films for so many years now – Blood Simple dates back to 1984. It was their first feature and they were kicking ass right out of the gate. Their Neo-Noir classic has gotten the Blu treatment finally and is available separately and as part of The Coen Brothers Collection set. …Continued…

Another Earth Blu-ray announced and detailed

Between the Fantasia Fest, general release and the rep theatres, Another Earth got a lot of big screen play here in Montreal. It’s almost unreal that I managed to miss out on it. Thankfully, Fox has got my back here, and has announced that they’ll be putting the no-budget sci-fi hit on Blu-ray in November. …Continued…

Now, the first two films, A Fistful of Dollars and For A Few Dollars More, are available separately on Blu. These are the identical discs from the set released a year ago. …Continued…

Star Wars Blu-ray controversy/screencaps/unboxing

It’s only a handful of days now until the Star Wars Blu-ray discs hit shops here in North America. You lucky folks in the UK get yours scant few hours from now. Over the past week or so, as the discs have moved through distribution channels, both media and a variety of ne’re-do-wells have been leaking information and a plethora of audio and video clips to forums and blogs. I’m sure you’ve seen by now, as I have, the many digital alterations and “touch-ups” that have been performed on the updated transfers of the films (and if, by chance, you’ve been living in a cave on Tatooine and missed them all, check out the video embed below.) There’s been a ton of fan outcry and a ton of media coverage of both the changes and the fan reaction. I’m sure I don’t need to pick over them again for you as, by now, they’ve been analyzed to death. But, as a number of you have asked for my thoughts on the matter, I thought I’d chime in. …Continued…

The Tree of Life Blu-ray announced and detailed

Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life has finally been officially announced for release on Blu-ray. As I reported a few weeks ago, eOne has got the Canadian release while the US version will come from Fox. The Canadian pre-order ship date listed on Amazon.ca has been pushed back a couple of weeks from the previously published September 27th to October 11th, to match the US. The Blu-ray is fairly bare-bones, including only a 30-minute “making of” doc but is reported to utilize “maximum bit rate encoding and 7.1 audio and a 2.0 stereo mix to bring Malick’s visually stunning masterpiece to life providing consumers with a premium cinematic viewing experience for the home.” Sounds good to me! I can’t wait to get my hands on this one. …Continued…

[VIDEO] X-Men: First Class Blu-ray trailer

I watched the DVD screener of X-Men: First Class that Fox sent over the other night and, once again, enjoyed the heck out the film. In fact, I was trying to get work done while it was playing, which proved pointless, as I couldn’t take my eyes off the screen. This is one hell of a fun little film! I’m really looking forward to Friday, September the 9th, the grab this up on Blu-ray and check it out in high-def. I’m expecting great things from this one. …Continued…

Star Wars Blu-ray first impressions and list of deleted scenes

I guess it’s kind of a big day for Star Wars Blu-ray discussion. I woke up to Bill Hunt‘s (of The Digital Bits‘ Bill Hunts) impressions of the upcoming 9-disc Complete Saga boxed set, from a tour of the product at Skywalker Ranch, given exclusively to a handful of journalists. It sounds like he was impressed, which just makes me want to have it in my hands that much more. …Continued…
