I admit. This has nothing to do with Blu-ray. I mean, I really hope that when the time comes, Disney will release this new, Avengers: Earths Mightiest Heroes animated series on Blu but I’m not going to hold my breath. …Continued…
While all the buzz around the nerd-nets recently has been surrounding Tron Legacy, the sequel to the 1982 hit film, AICN has uncovered some information about a possible Blu-ray release of the original feature! …Continued…
This is a huge release week for me. One of the most important of the year. There’s not a lot hitting the shops today but a couple of films here number amongst my favourites. As always, your clicks matter. If you enjoy this weekly column and want to support it and the site, please make your purchases through our Amazon links. By doing so, you’re directly helping the The Blu-ray Blog stay alive…just like Johnny 5.
I can’t believe I just typed that …Continued…
My Neighbour Totoro. Castle in the Sky. Kiki’s Delivery Service. These are among my favourite films of all time. And they are all newly re-released on DVD this week from Disney. …Continued…
Stunning. Absolutely stunning. Yeah, I’m a a bit of an unabashed Miyazaki fan but the Blu-ray disc of his latest film, Ponyo has completely blown me away! I didn’t think 2-D, hand-drawn animation could look this good in my home!! …Continued…
I’m not sure how I missed this one last month. A trailer for Henry Selick’s (Coraline) stop-motion animated James and Giant Peach has turned up on YouTube! Disney has yet to announce the title so all that’s known about the release is what you can see in the trailer. However, it seems as if the Blu-ray disc is being marketed to take advantage of the upcoming Tim Burton film, Alice in Wonderland (Burton was a producer on Peach). It seems likely that we’ll see James and the Giant Peach on Blu-ray in a release that coincides with Wonderland, sometime in June. …Continued…
Remember how we told you that it looked like My Neighbors the Yamadas would be the next Ghibli film to make it to Blu-ray? Well, it seems that Disney, Ghibli’s distributor has other plans. At the conclusion of an airing of the film on Japanese TV, the studio made the announcement that Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind would be the next Ghibli film to hit Blu! And it’s apparently going to be released this coming summer in Japan. …Continued…
I had no expectations of Surrogates. I mean, I didn’t really care for the blown-out, hot-colour look of it, from what little I witnessed in the trailers but I was willing to give it a shot. And you know what? It’s not half bad if you’re in the mood for a simple, fast-paced sci-fi/action thriller. …Continued…
Okay, this is just ridiculous. I can’t afford all of these discs in one week! I had no idea that February would be such a big release month. I thought March was going to be my bank-breaker and that I’d have another month to save up for the big titles but this week is going to make me reevaluate. …Continued…
I was elated when I heard the announcement of the new, remastered edition of Martin Scorsese’s Gangs of New York Blu-ray but there remained the question of how much of an improvement that disc would be over the original, brutally flawed release. Well now, thanks to the AVS Forum’s Xylon we have the answer. Check out these screenshot comparisons for proof! …Continued…
All right. We’re only a month and a bit away from finally getting our grubby little hands on the US/Canadian edition of the Ponyo Blu-ray. I can barely contain my excitement. Seriously! But a couple of days ago I found out that the Japanese language track on the disc will not be lossless. Only the English dub is receiving the royal treatment! …Continued…
March is going to absolutely bankrupt me! I can’t believe the slate of incredible titles coming to Blu-ray that month - Ponyo, Clash of the Titans, Fantastic Mr. Fox, The African Queen, Where The Wild Things Are… ARGH! Too…much…awesomeness…
Disney has just sent out its press release announcing their return to the glory of 2D cell animation, The Princess and The Frog for March release on Blu-ray. While it didn’t quite burn up the box office when it was released in December, there’s been a ton of critical praise for the film. I really hope it does well on Blu and that we’ll continue to see Disney producing 2D features into the future. 3D CGI films are nice and all, but I really miss hand-drawn animation. Details on the Blu-ray release below: …Continued…
At long last, one of the most reviled Blu-ray discs unleashed on the unsuspecting consumer can be chucked in the bucket, removed from your library forever and replaced with this sparkling new remaster! Yes ladies and gentlemen, we’re about to get that version of Martin Scorsese’s Gangs of New York that we’ve all been waiting for! The one that doesn’t look like dirty videotape! The one that doesn’t suck! The Gangs of our dreams! …Continued…
Here’s a nice new trailer trumpeting the March release of both Toy Story and Toy Story 2 on Blu-ray. As awesome as this news is, March is all about the Blu-ray release of Ponyo for me. Until I get my Miyazaki fix, it’s going to be kind of difficult to get excited about anything else! …Continued…
There has been a lot of talk around the internets about Disney’s Fantasia films having their Blu-ray release pushed back well into 2011. I’m not quite sure where all that nonsense originated but if you ask me, the trailer above is more than enough confirmation from the studio that we’re going to see the discs hitting the shops sometime this year! …Continued…
I like Mike Judge’s work a lot. I really do. He has an uncanny ability to distill the character of a community or sub-cluture down into a tight, little quirky film. Most famously in the cult hit Office Space but also in years of his animated TV show, King of the Hill. His latest film is called Extract and it’s more of what Judge does best - a look at regular people working regular jobs with a focus on the minutiae of their day-to-day existence and a little bit of grifting thrown in, just to keep things interesting. …Continued…
It’s another talking animal movie from Walt Disney Home Entertainment and another video review from my nephew and niece, Max and Olivia. …Continued…
This is great news! Disney Pixar will be releasing Blu-ray editions of Toy Story 1 and 2 in concert with the theatrical release of Toy Story 3! These films should look spectacular in high-def, as they’ll be transfered to disc directly from the digital files. This is the one case where the age of the film won’t directly effect the quality of the disc. …Continued…
No sir! It’s no longer just a rumour or a dream. This is for real. It’s official, Ponyo is coming to Blu-ray on March 2nd, 2010 (as disc producer Frank Marshall had revealed to us a couple of months ago.) We may not be getting the sheer cornucopia of special features that the Japanese Blu-ray release received but with the collection of short documentary features, we’re certainly seeing more content included than previous domestic Ghibli disc releases. …Continued…
Talking dogs. In Santa hats. Pulling a sleigh, delivering presents, saving Christmas. How does that sound to you? Yeah, me too. But I’ll tell you something, the kids love it. Want proof? Watch this video review from Max and Olivia! …Continued…
