Along with the mind boggling collection of single-film releases Criterion is planning to shower down on us this November, the studio has also announced plans to release an incredible looking 7-film boxed set called America Lost and Found: The BBS Story, containing the films made and produced by Bob Rafelson, Bert Schneider, and Steve Blauner between 1968 and 1972. …Continued…
Uhhhh…Criterion totally blew me away this week. I think that’s why I haven’t gotten around to posting their slate of November releases yet (announced a couple of days ago.) There’s just way too much coming out! So, I’m splitting the announcements up into a couple of posts. This one will deal with the single disc titles and I’ll follow up with the rundown of titles in their ginormous, incredible-looking America Lost and Found: The BBS Story boxed set. Here we go: …Continued…
This week’s got something for everyone – a bat-shit crazy asian-western, straight-up Shakespeare, comedy/drama set in the 70s, one of the best seasons of any TV show you’ll see this year, all topped off by another stellar release from The Criterion Collection! Who could blame you for not knowing where to start this week? …Continued…
If you read my recent review of The Criterion Collection release of Terry Zwigoff’s Crumb on Blu-ray, you’re no doubt aware of my passion for comic books. And it just so happens that one of my all-time favourite comics is Daniel Clowes’ brilliant Ghost World, adapted into a film by Zwigoff in 2001. Well, the news of the day, as far as I’m concerned is that we might just be seeing the film starring Thora Birch and Scarlett Johansson on Criterion Blu sometime next year, if Zwigoff has anything to say about it. …Continued…
I grew up fascinated with comic books, spending as much time in the classroom creating cartoons as I did reading them afterward. When the documentary Crumb was released in 1995 it was like a sucker punch to my gut – seeing so much of my own passion for the medium on screen but filtered through the incredibly twisted mind of Robert Crumb and his eccentric family. …Continued…
Huh. Well, how do you like them apples? It appears as though a good portion of the best discs out this week are comedies – Classic Bogdonavich, stars of NBC comedies, and a couple of the best Chevy Chase films ever made. All topped off by a brand, spanking new Criterion Blu-ray release. It’s gonna be a good week… …Continued…
It’s another hot one today, here in Montreal. A great day to stay inside, crank up the AC and enjoy a new Blu-ray disc. As has frequently been the case of late, we’ve got another new release from Criterion sitting in the top spot, followed by a Hollywood blockbuster. I hate to say it though, that I’m actually most excited about my #4 pick this week. Perhaps its a result of coming off a week of Comic Con updates or perhaps I’m just in the mood for something animated but I can’t wait to sink my teeth into DC Comics next superhero cartoon feature! Those things just keep getting better and better! …Continued…
I’m going to have to get a second job. There isn’t a single title in Criterion’s October release slate that isn’t a must-own for me. They are all films I love, most from directors I’m quite passionate about (Kurosawa, Anderson, Kubrick, Bergman.) What’s a film nut to do but offer up all of his hard earned cash to the gods of home video? …Continued…
We’re back! You might have noticed a lack of posts in the last few days. Well, we’ve been out west in Winnipeg attending the wedding of our good friends Angie and Tyson (see the incredible photos here: http://kampblog.com) and have just returned back to Montreal. It was a fantastic trip with some really fantastic people. But now we’re back and there’s a shit-ton of Blu-ray news and reviews to catch up on. And since this Top 5 New Release column is now officially a day late, I’ll just blast through most of the commentary and give you a quick overview of all the goodies now on store shelves… …Continued…
It’s been a hell of a week. I don’t know if you’ve been following Twitter as we suffer through the odyssey that is keeping The Blu-ray Blog online, but I’ve been forced to take the site down and rebuild it TWICE in the last seven days! You know Blu-ray disc has finally hit the big-time when little sites that talk about it, like this one become targets. I’m really sorry if the non-stop barrage of spam ads has upset your enjoyment of the site. I’m desperately trying to fend these jerks off and promise to keep on top of it, as best as I can. So, that said, seeing as how it’s athis post is already a day late and I’m totally wiped out keeping up with this nonsense as well as my day job, I’m just going to lay this list out for you without much, if any commentary. Here we go… …Continued…
