Top New Blu-ray releases for the Week of September 6

This week’s new Blu-ray releases include ‘X-MEN: FIRST CLASS’ from Fox, ‘STRAW DOGS’ and ‘DRESSED TO KILL’ from MGM/Fox, ‘SCARFACE’ and ‘HANNA’ from Universal, ‘FRINGE: THE COMPLETE SEASON THREE’ from Warner, ‘THE EXTRAORDINARY ADVENTURES OF ADELE BLANC-SEC’ from eOne and many, many more!

Scarface coming to Blu-ray in September

I’ve never been a fan of Brain De Palma‘s Scarface but hold it in the highest regard for what it offered cinema at the time and pop culture through the decade that followed. Hell, without Scarface we never would have had Miami Vice! I can hardly imagine a world without Crockett, Tubbs and the music of Jan Hammer. Universal has announced it’s plan to bring the seminal ’80s film to Blu-ray this September 6th in a couple of limited editions, a steelbook package that includes the original 1932 film and one quite pricey version that includes “an elegantly hand-crafted Scarface-themed humidor” that clocks in at almost a grand! That’s a lot of chedda’! Details below: …Continued…

Top 5 New Blu-ray releases for the Week of July 13

All right, I’m going to be straight with you here. I haven’t seen a single one of the films being released on Blu-ray this week. This is rare. Either I went out of my way to avoid these movies when they were in theatres (The Bounty Hunter) or was just too swamped to make it out to a screening (Chloe, In Bruges, Greenberg, etc…) Also unusual is that I wasn’t sent a single review copy for films out on Blu this week. So, in honour of my ignorance, I’ll list the films in order of my desire to see them, whether they’re actually worth watching or not. …Continued…

Top 5 New Blu-ray releases for the Week of May 18

This week is a no-brainer for me, as the number one pick is one of my all time favourite films! The rest of the Blu-ray discs out this week are a bit of a mixed bag, though, with some decent, new Hollywood fliks (and some truly awful ones), some catalogue titles and a couple of pretty decent anime releases. …Continued…

The Godfather: Part II Blu-ray Disc Review

I have strong feelings about The Godfather: Part II and I’m not sure where to start talking about them.

First, I guess I want to address the popular opinion that it’s a better film than its predecessor. It is not. It is inferior in many ways; the story is at times confusing and unnecessarily convoluted for the sake of adding ‘intrigue’; the characters behave insincerely, their actions often in service to the movement of the plot rather than their own hearts, and the ending is weak and unsatisfying. …Continued…

The Godfather Blu-ray Disc Review

You don’t need me to review the story of The Godfather for you. Chances are, you’ve seen it and you already know that it’s Francis Ford Coppola’s masterpiece and arguably one of the best films ever made. The last scene of the film is one of my favourite movie endings of all time, and it still gives me chills after countless viewings. …Continued…

Heat Blu-ray Disc Review

It’s hard to believe that you can refer to any film made in the 90s as a classic. But I think the term holds a lot of water in a handful of cases. Fifteen years on, Michael Mann’s Heat has earned its place in the pantheon of masterfully made action-films. And this new Blu-ray edition of the film is one of the finest ways to celebrate it. …Continued…

Michael Mann Recuts Heat for Blu-ray Release, Full Disc details

Looks like director Michael Mann has taken the old hatchet to his popular film, Heat. We’ve just received the final list of bonus features for the upcoming Blu-ray edition of the film and it notes “New Content Changes Supervised by Director Michael Mann”. Now, what these changes might entail has yet to be revealed. What we can tell you is that the original running time of the film was 171 minutes (the original DVD release was listed at 172 minutes), whereas the Blu-ray seems to clock in at 170. Yep. That’s about it for now. Check out the art for the back of the package below: …Continued…
