NOTE: THIS IS A REVIEW OF THE CANADIAN BLU-RAY RELEASE OF THE FILM FROM ALLIANCE.

“Cave of Forgotten Dreams follows an exclusive expedition into the nearly inaccessible Chauvet Cave in France, home to the most ancient visual art known to have been created by man. It’s an unforgettable cinematic experience that provides a unique glimpse of the pristine artwork dating back to human hands over 30,000 years ago – almost twice as old as any previous discovery.“

I like to have my mind blown. When I saw Cave of Forgotten Dreams in theatres a while back my mind got severely blown. Werner Herzog‘s 3-D journey into the Chauvet cave documents some of the most amazing art on the planet. It left me speechless. 30,000 year-old cave art rendered in amazing 3-D amplifying all the contours of the caves took my breath away. I would have been amazed had contemporary artists crafted such masterpieces. Needless to say, I was excited about the Blu-ray release.

Unfortunately, I was reminded of my initial concerns with the film. Due to technical constraints all the footage was shot on ” a tiny non professional rig” and was all lit by heatless on-camera lights and headlamps. Dark, dank caves are not ideal shooting locations. The colors are unsaturated, the blacks are weak and the shaking hand-cam on exterior shots just left me disappointed. The video was choppy at times as well, it was a bit jarring and inconsistent. The video wasn’t as sharp as it could have been and often blown-out. All this leads me to believe the problems stem from shooting originally in 3-D, the best way this film should be viewed. Its presented in 1080p, 1.78:1, widescreen here.

As for sound, Herzog’s Bavarian bizarreness is exemplified throughout most of the film as he narrates over Ernst Reijseger‘s wonderful score. It might not always look as beautiful as it should but at least the DTS-HD MA 5.1 track always sounds beautiful.

The disc has little in terms of extras: trailer, dull photo album of old men doing weird things and upcoming releases. Boring. How about some more background information on the caves, or a visit to other caves, or more interviews by Herzog asking people random questions? Herzog broaches big philosophical question in the film but I just want to know why they skimped on the extras on the Blu-ray.

So while the content alone warrants a viewing, the disc itself is a bit of a let down and not on par with the subject at hand.

EDITOR’S NOTE: The US Blu-ray edition of the film from MPI, which will be released next week, November 29th, is on 2-discs and features both 2D and 3D versions of the film, along with “Ode To The Dawn Of Man“, a 40-minute doc about the making of the score for the film.

What a week! If not for the lack of 3D version of Avatar, I think we could officially claim this as the most massive outing for the new three-dimensional format do date. Even still, with eight films new on 3D Blu, James Cameron‘s Pandoran epic, with its multiple cuts, bevy of extras and near perfect presentation, still reigns supreme.

1. AVATAR EXTENDED COLLECTOR’S EDITION

Nothing beats the heavyweight champ. The biggest film of the year or possibly even of all time. James Cameron’s Avatar makes its triumphant return to Blu-ray this week in a 3-disc set that’s bound to find its way under damn near every Blu-ray fan’s Christmas tree this year.

Not only is this Extended Collector’s Edition packed to the gills with the deleted scenes and extras you’ve been waiting the year to see but it also features three cuts of the award winning film, all demo-disc worthy. With the technical quality of the video and audio presentation off the charts (and surprisingly equal to the stand alone disc available earlier this year) this Blu-ray set has claimed the crown of high-def title to beat! Bring on the challengers!!

2. THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER

On any other week, Charles Laughton‘s Night of the Hunter would have easily been in the number one slot. This nightmarish Mother Goose tale is sadly the only film the famous actor ever directed and it’s a damn shame. Because it’s a masterwork. Robert Mitchum has never been better or more creepy.

Criterion finally does the film justice, presenting it in its original aspect ratio of 1.66:1 as opposed to the 1.33 of previous presentations. Couple that with Criterion’s exceptional package of special features and this is clearly one of the finest releases of the year.

Special Features:

New, restored high-definition digital transfer with uncompressed monaural soundtrack

Audio commentary featuring assistant director Terry Sanders, film critic F. X. Feeney, archivist Robert Gitt, and author Preston Neal Jones

Charles Laughton Directs “The Night of the Hunter,” a two-and-a-half-hour archival treasure trove of outtakes from the film

New documentary featuring interviews with producer Paul Gregory, Sanders, Jones, and author Jeffrey Couchman

New video interview with Simon Callow, author of Charles Laughton: A Difficult Actor

Clip from the The Ed Sullivan Show, in which cast members perform live a scene that was deleted from the film

Criterion does the Little Tramp justice as well this week. Charlie Chaplin‘s final outing as his most famous character has never looked better in this restored 2K-resolution digital transfer. Gone are the rounded corners and frayed edges of precious transfers, replaced with a rich, detailed image. There have been some nice editions of this film in the recent past but nothing bests this new one from Criterion. Recommended!

Special Features:

New, restored high-definition digital transfer, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack

New audio commentary by Chaplin biographer David Robinson

Two new visual essays, by Chaplin historians John Bengtson and Jeffrey Vance

Interview from 1992 with Modern Times music arranger David Raksin

Chaplin Today: “Modern Times” (2004), a half-hour program with filmmakers Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne

Two segments removed from the film

Three theatrical trailers

All at Sea (1933), a home movie by Alistair Cooke featuring Charlie Chaplin, Paulette Goddard, and Cooke, plus a new score by Donald Sosin and a new interview with Cooke’s daughter, Susan Cooke Kittredge

The Rink (1916), a Chaplin two-reeler highlighting his skill on wheels

For the First Time (1967), a Cuban documentary short about a projectionist who shows Modern Times to first-time moviegoers

PLUS: A booklet featuring an essay by film critic Saul Austerlitz and a piece by film scholar Lisa Stein that includes excerpts from Chaplin’s writing about his travels in 1931 and 1932

Speaking of Charles Laughton, his turn as the cruel Captain William Bligh in the 1935 edition of Mutiny on the Bounty with Clark Gable is new on Blu this week. Warner‘s new restoration looks mostly fantastic (there is some damage on the print that has not been restored yet…but nevermind, this looks great!) on Blu-ray. Certainly the best its ever looked on home video. The disc is packaged in a nice hardcover digibook but includes sadly few special features.

5. SHERLOCK JR./THREE AGES

Kino‘s new Blu-ray with both the short films Sherlock Jr. and Three Ages is a welcome addition to the studios Buster Keaton collection. While the visuals are nowhere near as reference quality as The General or even Steamboat Bill Jr., Sherlock Jr is certainly impressive. Three Ages doesn’t fare quiet as well but is still a treat in high-def. The disc has a host of extra features such as multiple music tracks, a commentary track, documentary and more!

Another week, another sixth entry in the Top 5 list. I haven’t seen FUNimation‘s new Robo-Geisha film yet but based on the sheer entertainment value and disc quality of the studio’s recent Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl I thought this release was probably worth a mention. I’ve seen the trailer and I haven’t been the same since. I haven’t been able to get the image of geisha girls shooting ninja stars from their butts out of my head since…

Remember how I had trouble getting inspired to pick up one of last weeks new Blu-ray releases? Well, let me tell you, that’s so far from being an issue this week. There’s actually just way, way too many quality discs coming out over the next few days, from a couple of new Criterion releases, an Oscar winner and the biggest box office blockbuster of 2009. This is a going to hurt my wallet something fierce.

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, the King of the Box-office world has another hit on his hands and its this weeks number one Blu-ray! But before you get too excited and rush out to your local video shop to grab up a copy of Avatar on Blu today, remember that its release date is actually a couple of days from now, Earth Day, April 22. The disc itself is a bare-bones affair, sporting only the film in 1080p on the Blu-ray and standard-def on DVD, with nary an extra in sight. You’ll have to wait until November for the full featured, multi-disc, bonus feature-replete edition of the film, if that’s the kind of thing you prefer. Still, though this isn’t a perfect release, the amount of heat surrounding it assures it the number one slot this week.

Amazon: $19.99

2. Two From Criterion: VIVRE SA VIE, SUMMER HOURS

The only reason that these two new releases from Criterion aren’t in the number one slot is because Avatar looks to be the biggest film of all time. But rest assured, both easily trump the 3D other-world epic in terms of over-all quality. The two films have little in common, aside from country of origin. Both are French films, but Vivre sa Vie is a classic Godard film from 1962 while Summer Hours is a contemporary effort from director Olivier Assayas, released in 2008. He won the ‘Best Actor’ Oscar for his performance here. The film also won ‘Best Original Song’ for ‘The Weary Kind’. Those seem like two pretty good reasons to give this disc a shot.

At one point dubbed ‘The Greatest Film of All Time’, Battleship Potemkin is a silent gem, crafted by genius filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein. While its been in the public domain for quite some time, this Blu-ray release comes to us from Kino International, who have already delivered an exemplary example of what Blu-ray can do for films that are nearing the century mark (Keaton‘s The General) and will continue to do so when they release a Blu-ray edition of the new restoration of Fritz Lang‘s Metropolis later on this year.

I wasn’t a huge fan of Steven Spielberg‘s Minority Report when I saw it in theatres, lo, those many years ago. But you know what? This new Blu-ray has made a convert out of me. I’m not sure if its the film itself or absolutely pitch-perfect transfer and encode that made me really enjoy it this time around but I found that I was eating up every moment of the film. The production design, music, photography – everything here is so wonderful and well thought out. And looks as good as it ever will on this incredible Blu-ray. On any other week, this release would probably have garnered the number one slot. Highly recommended!

I’ve got to admit, this trailer for Fox’s upcoming Avatar Blu-ray makes the release look pretty tasty. Is it just me or have they bumped up the saturation here? It’s all a lot more vivid and … blue than I recall it looking in the cinema. Perhaps the Imax 3D glasses I was wearing dulled the image down sufficiently to sap some of the blue from the alien skin. Anyway, I’m now sold on this Avatar Blu-ray. Even though this edition will only be in 2D I have a feeling these visuals are going to be pretty spectacular on Blu-ray. We only have to wait until Earth Day, April 22nd to find out for sure. ...Continued...

Well, now look at that. It’s official. Fox has finally admitted it. Avatar is being released on Blu-ray and DVD on Earth Day, April 22nd, just like writer/director James Cameron said it would. Just like every media outlet under the sun was reporting. Sigh…I hate these PR games. Why can’t we all just get along?

So, you’re all set to hit up Amazon and pre-order yourself a copy, right? Not so fast, pilgrim! You haven’t heard the details of this release yet. Prepare to be unimpressed, folks. Avatar will hit Blu-ray in a “Superbit” style, movie-only edition, where, Fox claims, it has left out all the gratuitous nonsense (read: trailers, animated menus and special features) in favour of maxing out the video and audio bandwidth to deliver the ultimate high-def presentation of the film. A more souped-up, multi-disc edition with an extended cut of the film and hours of extras will follow in November with a third dip, this time in 3D, expected in 2011.

Now, you might be thinking to yourself that you can justify the purchase of a couple of versions of the film back-to-back if they’re different enough. Look at the Watchmen sets! Look at Lord of the Rings! There’s enough of a difference between the standard and extended editions of those releases to warrant multiple purchases, right? Maybe. I dunno. But I, for one, am going to have difficulty swallowing the MSRP $39.99 price tag pill for the movie-only Avatar Blu-ray whose sole special feature is the inclusion of a copy of the film on DVD (the DVD on its own is MSRP $29.98, so maybe this isn’t such a bad deal after all!)

I’m anxious to see how much of the 50 gigabytes on the Blu-ray disc is taken up by the film in this ultimate, movie-only presentation of Avatar. If it’s less that 80% of capacity I think there will be a lot of fans crying foul. You don’t need 10gbs to hold a commentary track!

UPDATE: I forgot to mention that if you live in the UK you’ll have the option of purchasing the limited edition “Steelbook” release of Avatar, which comes packaged with 208-page Activist Survival Guide and four lenticular artcards. Yeesh.

All right. I guess I’ve been avoiding a couple of things on the blog lately. Specifically, I haven’t posted any of the multitude of rumours about James Cameron‘s epic hit film, Avatar coming to Blu-ray. And I’ve also been avoiding the whole 3D thing. While the two topics seem to be intrinsically attached, I’m going to try to focus on Avatar alone today. I’ve got so much to say about this whole 3D-in-the-home business that I think it warrants its own article.

<a href="

So, let’s start with this weeks revelation – package art and release date. It seems that UK retail sources have received the above image of the Avatar special edition “Steelbook” package art along with a release date that will see the 2D edition of the Blu-ray hitting the streets around Earth Day, April 22nd. Now, there’s no debating that this is a real package shot. It might not end up looking exactly like this over here in North America but this appears to be pretty solid. I kind of have a hard time believing that Avatar will be released in April while it’s still doing really well in theatres! But this does line up with the date that James Cameron himself leaked a couple of weeks ago. For the record, Cameron has also claimed that we’ll be getting a 3D edition of the Blu-ray in November. A Fox spokesman has stated otherwise. So, either way, if it’s the 3D version of the Blu-ray you’re after (and it most likely isn’t, as I doubt anyone actually owns a 3D display or player at this point) you better be prepared to wait a little while longer.

Cameron has also revealed that the early release 2D edition of Avatar on home video will be a more bare-bones affair but will include over 10-minutes of deleted scenes (including the heavily reported CGI sex scene between the blue, digital versions of actors Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana) that will shed more light on the Na’vi people of Pandora. In an interview with MTV, he said, “It’s all wonderful stuff, but it was sort of bogging down the middle section of the movie…So there’s plenty for a value-added DVD experience on this film. Of course, we’ll have to go punch it all up and get it all mixed and stuff like that.”

Keep in mind that without an official announcement from Fox, all information regarding an Avatar Blu-ray release must be considered a rumour. We hope to hear something official very soon!

One of the thrills of hitting up a museum or science centre is often getting the opportunity to chill out, after a day of exploring old bones and ancient pottery, by relaxing into a soft IMAX theatre chair and enjoying a big-screen science-related documentary. Dinosaurs Alive!, one such film, is now on Blu-ray disc and, while heavier on the paleontology than CGI thunder-lizards, will most likely not disappoint the young dino-enthusiast in the family.

Dinosaurs Alive! is clearly crafted for the younger set. With a shifting narrative that follows paleontologists Mike Novacek and Mark Norell from a New Mexico dig, flashing back to the Gobi desert of the 1920s and the work of dino-hunter (and Indiana Jones inspiration) Roy Chapman Andrews and intercut with computer-generated footage that brings the dinosaurs to life, the film can seem a bit unfocussed. But with its brief 40 minute runtime, Dinosaurs Alive! feels less like its struggling to take you somewhere and more like its trying to cram in as much information and excitement as possible. Youngsters more interested in the science aspects of the film will find a lot to love about the production but those only looking for big-screen thrills may be less-than-impressed by the 10 minutes of CGI dino-footage. I have a feeling that the CGI work may have been more effective in 3-D IMAX cinemas than here on 2-D Blu-ray, with the dinosaurs running and biting at me, popping out of the giant IMAX screen. As it stands, the effect work just looks really fake on Blu-ray. The dinosaurs shift around on the backgrounds like they have no weight. I found it distracting. But my nine-year old nephew, with his less-discerning eye and unabashed love for all things from the Triassic to Cretaceous will absolutely adore it!

Dinosaurs Alive! may not have the best looking special effects work in film history but its Blu-ray disc looks stunning. What a great transfer. I guess this crazy amount of detail is to be expected when the source print is a 65mm negative. There’s a bit of black crush exhibited occasionally but otherwise this is demo disc material. And not just on the visual front. The three DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 tracks (English, Spanish, and French) will shatter your windows and give even the best sound system a workout.

The absolute highlight of the disc for me, though was not the film itself but the 26 minute The Making of Dinosaurs Alive featurette, providing an insight into the herculean challenges of capturing images in IMAX 3-D. Lugging the heaviest camera in the world, clocking in at a mighty 250lbs, the camera chugs through two 1000 ft. rolls of 65mm film every three minutes at a cost of $1000 a roll! That’s $11 a second! CHOKE! Not a cheap system but well worth it when the results are as lush and breathtaking as some of the footage in this film.

The disc also features a trivia quiz, Meet The Creatures stat pages and clips and trailers for other IMAX films.

So much stuff to get to today! I’m gonna keep my blethering short and sweet in an effort to get as much news out to you as possible.

And top of the list today, is some animation news. Paramount and Dreamworks have previously announced the release date of Monsters vs. Aliens but now they’ve given us the full details for the Blu-ray disc. The really interesting thing about this release is the lack of 3-D on the feature.

Much has been made of the theatrical 3-D experience lately, with almost every new animated feature turning up in the format on the big screen. In the cinema, we get to experience the film through polarized lenses, colours staying true and image fidelity relatively uncompromised. The best we can do at home at the moment is the old school, blue/green lens anaglyph 3-D format, which changes colours and generally looks a bit shifty on screen at the best of times. While Monsters vs. Aliens was released in 3-D in the theatres, Paramount/Dreamworks have decided to hold off downgrading the film’s image for the Blu-ray release. Instead, issuing only the 2-D version, and keeping the 3-D version on the drawing board, ready to rerelease when the Blu-ray consortium has ratified and standardized a method to bring the experience home.

For those a little peeved that they’re missing out on an opportunity to wear their anaglyph glasses, the studios offer up a little taste of 3-D in the new short film, B.O.B.’s Big Break.
