There have been a fair number of classic and very important films announced for release on Blu-ray this year already, though we’re only twenty-eight days into 2011. And despite the fact that there has been no official announcement yet in North America it has become clear in the last couple of days that Martin Scorsese‘s Taxi Driver will, at long last, be making its way to Blu this coming April. …Continued…
The first hints at the upcoming Blu-ray release of the latest Harry Potter film are beginning to surface, including an April release date and a first look at what might be included in the collection of special features. …Continued…
Sometimes a little snippet of news creeps onto the interwebs from out of nowhere and absolutely makes my day. Today, Bleeding Cool confirmed, via an interview with director David Lynch on KCRW (and dugpa.com) that we will, in fact see a new Blu-ray edition of Blue Velvet soon and that it will contain some of the long lost deleted scenes from the film! Consider my day made. …Continued…
I went to see Tron: Legacy with my nephew on my birthday last month and, I’ve got to tell you, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the film. It looks and sounds phenomenal! What an aesthetic triumph! Since then I’ve been foaming at the mouth, desperate to get my hands on any news regarding its release on Blu-ray. Well, Collider looks to have struck gold. …Continued…
Okay, I’m sorry, didn’t we just go through this nonsense twelve months ago? The theatrical editions of the Lord of the Rings films were released on Blu-ray to great controversy last year, partly due to transfers that didn’t seem to live up to most expectations and partly due to the exclusion of the much-lauded Extended Editions. And now, after the studio and director Peter Jackson himself assured us that the less-than-ideal Blu-ray releases already in our hands were only to tide us over until the mega-perfect Ultimate boxed set would be released many years down the road, along with the coming of The Hobbit, we now find out that Warner is on the verge of unleashing the longer cuts on Blu this year! …Continued…
You’ll never believe it if I tell you but I still haven’t gotten a chance to see Scott Pilgrim yet. Yeah, I know. It’s almost too late. But as I prepare myself to completely miss out on the big-screen experience, Bleeding Cool has whet my appetite for the eventual Blu-ray release of the film with their report detailing some of the special features we’re likely to see on the disc. Read on! …Continued…
If you read my recent review of The Criterion Collection release of Terry Zwigoff’s Crumb on Blu-ray, you’re no doubt aware of my passion for comic books. And it just so happens that one of my all-time favourite comics is Daniel Clowes’ brilliant Ghost World, adapted into a film by Zwigoff in 2001. Well, the news of the day, as far as I’m concerned is that we might just be seeing the film starring Thora Birch and Scarlett Johansson on Criterion Blu sometime next year, if Zwigoff has anything to say about it. …Continued…
It looks like IGN‘s Blu-ray reporters have nabbed the inside scoop on the layout and special features of the upcoming Complete Grindhouse Collection Blu-ray 2-Disc set. And let me tell you, it looks pretty sweet. But be warned, as “Complete” as the set might claim to be, it is missing one vital piece of the Grindhouse puzzle – Machete is nowhere to be found! That’s right folks, as Machete is no longer only a faux-trailer, and exists outside of the Grindhouse collection as a full-fledged feature film in its own right, Vivendi Entertainment and The Weinstein Company have yanked it from the playlist. Outside of that one glaring omission, everything seems to be in order here. I’m just curious how compressed the films are going to be, now that they’ll be squished together onto one disc. Time and review screeners will tell… …Continued…
This has been a long, long, long time coming! Those of us who are fans of Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’ Grindhouse films have been waiting since the formats inception to finally get our dirty mitts on an Ultimate Collector’s Boxed set of both films and the trailers that originally screened between them during the initial theatrical run. Japan got such a set on DVD a few years back but we, on the other side of the Pacific have had no such luck. Well, it looks like things are finally about to change… …Continued…
