If you read my recent review of The Criterion Collection release of Terry Zwigoff’s Crumb on Blu-ray, you’re no doubt aware of my passion for comic books. And it just so happens that one of my all-time favourite comics is Daniel Clowes’ brilliant Ghost World, adapted into a film by Zwigoff in 2001. Well, the news of the day, as far as I’m concerned is that we might just be seeing the film starring Thora Birch and Scarlett Johansson on Criterion Blu sometime next year, if Zwigoff has anything to say about it. …Continued…
It looks like IGN‘s Blu-ray reporters have nabbed the inside scoop on the layout and special features of the upcoming Complete Grindhouse Collection Blu-ray 2-Disc set. And let me tell you, it looks pretty sweet. But be warned, as “Complete” as the set might claim to be, it is missing one vital piece of the Grindhouse puzzle – Machete is nowhere to be found! That’s right folks, as Machete is no longer only a faux-trailer, and exists outside of the Grindhouse collection as a full-fledged feature film in its own right, Vivendi Entertainment and The Weinstein Company have yanked it from the playlist. Outside of that one glaring omission, everything seems to be in order here. I’m just curious how compressed the films are going to be, now that they’ll be squished together onto one disc. Time and review screeners will tell… …Continued…
This has been a long, long, long time coming! Those of us who are fans of Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’ Grindhouse films have been waiting since the formats inception to finally get our dirty mitts on an Ultimate Collector’s Boxed set of both films and the trailers that originally screened between them during the initial theatrical run. Japan got such a set on DVD a few years back but we, on the other side of the Pacific have had no such luck. Well, it looks like things are finally about to change… …Continued…

And thanks to mega-sites Planete HD and DVD Duell they’ve come up with the gold – a long, long list of potential bonus features, packaging ideas and a possible French release date. BAM! Well done, guys. Details below: …Continued…
Do you see that video up above? That’s a clip from a new Dark Knight featurette called “Truck Flip”, detailing one of the practical effect shots from the film, with director Christopher Nolan and special effects supervisor, Chris Corbould narrating. This featurette is not included on the Blu-ray edition of the film that you probably already own. And it’s only a part of a package of 31-minutes of brand new, never before seen bonus content, only just revealed. Could this mean that Warner is preparing one of their Ultimate Collector’s Edition box sets for the film? …Continued…
I’ve been looking out for some news of an updated Blu-ray release of the original 1987 Predator film, seeing as how the new sequel starring Adrien Brody is set for a July release and the original disc from Fox was disastrously light on special features. And now I’ve finally uncovered it. …Continued…
Members of the AVS Forum who have had a chance to preview the upcoming Lord of the Rings Blu-ray set are reporting that the transfer/encode does not live up to expectations. The first film in the series, The Fellowship of the Ring is noted as purportedly being particularly soft and subject to overuse of Digital Noise Reduction. …Continued…
I never thought I would say this but I freaking love Twitter! About an hour ago, Ben Lim, one of the fine fellows who work for The Criterion Collection tweeted a photo with the note “Screening the HD master of an upcoming release…“. That image appears to be from Terrence Malick’s brilliant The Thin Red Line providing evidence that my favourite home video label is preparing to release the 1998 film! …Continued…
The Digital Bits is confirming the rumour we reported last week, that the original 1982 Tron will be released on Blu-ray for the holidays this year. Specifically, the disc should hit shops in November, a good month before the sequel comes to theatres. In addition, the Bits has revealed that The Lion King will be making its way to Blu in about a year and a half, currently scheduled for an October 2011 release. Hakuna matata… …Continued…
Killer lampshades. Girl-hungry grand pianos. Spooky cats with sparkling eyes. Hausu is, without question, the freakiest, most peculiar horror film ever made. And now, it seems that Criterion have gotten their mitts on it and are preparing it for home video! …Continued…
