The 85th Academy Award Winners on Blu-ray

The 85th Academy Award Winners on Blu-ray

Hey, guess what? I totally avoided watching the Oscars this year! Yeah! I chose instead to power through a few more episodes of the final season of Fringe (only 2 left!) and I’m happy I did. From the tweets I saw streaming by it looks like the Oscars were something of a shit show. But honestly, that’s nothing new. I could care less about the awards themselves but I’m very keen to learn the Canadian Blu-ray release dates of some of these titles so I can get my grubby hands on them and finally catch up on all the stellar looking films I’ve missed during their theatrical runs. It appears we’ll have most of them available in high-def before too long but I have a feeling that Sony will hold back Amour for a few months more, possibly until August, as they’ve tended to do with their Best Foreign Film nominees in the recent past. Bummer.

Top 20 Blu-ray Releases of 2012 (US/Canada)

Well, that was a hell of a year. 2012 was a tad tumultuous over here at The Blu-ray Blog, with a hack so vicious that it took us down for a good long time and, on the bright side, wave upon wave of some of the best Blu-ray discs we’ve seen thus far in the lifespan of the format. Yeah. Low lows and high highs. Crazy shit.

So, now, looking back on the year in Blu-ray, I’m stuck trying to choose the releases that really bowled me over and I’m running into serious problems. Not only are there too many great discs to choose from but a) a great deal of the best are from a single label and b) there are a whole bunch of well reviewed and lauded discs that I simply didn’t screen (what does a guy have to do to get review discs from the likes of Twilight Time, Olive and Kino?!) It’s a pickle. So, taking that into consideration, I’ve done my best to provide something of an overview of the year in Blu, subjective as it is.

The 84th Oscar Winners on Blu-ray

The 84th Oscar Winners on Blu-ray

I can’t believe I actually sat through the entire Oscar ceremony again. I feel like Paul Bettany in The Da Vinci Code, with the self-flagellation and everything. Why do I do this to myself? This year might have actually been the worst ever. Even worse than last year. Who knew Billy Crystal could stink the show up even more than Franco and Hathaway? Anyway, I guess it wasn’t actually all that painful as, at its core, it’s a celebration of the movies. And we all love the movies, right? More importantly, we all love watching said movies, looking and sounding great on Blu-ray in the comfort of our own homes. Thankfully, most of the winning films are already available on Blu and those that aren’t show signs of turning up in stores soon.

Classic Hammer films being restored, released on Blu-ray

Classic Hammer films being restored, released on Blu-ray

It’s like all my fondest and wildest Blu-ray dreams are coming true all at once!! First the Universal Monsters films, then the Macross anime series and now a good portion of Hammer Films‘ catalogue films have all been announced for release this year. Is everyone celebrating an anniversary, or what? This is nuts! Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining but my bank account is going to be mighty drained by the time December rolls around if all of these releases come to pass as they’ve been announced.
