I don’t know about you, but I’ve been setting aside a small pot of cash to hit up the inevitable windfall of Black Friday deals, set to make us all that much poorer in less than a couple of weeks time. Well, Amazon is clearly an impatient beast. Not satisfied to wait until the holiday sales to empty our wallets, the online e-tailer has cut 50% off the suggested retail price of the awesome-looking Farscape The Complete Series Blu-ray set, knocking it down to under $100. What’s that you say? Price still too steep? Consider for a moment that you’re getting 20-discs of remastered content here, at under $5 a disc and perhaps you’ll see this deal in a new light. If you love sci-fi or if you’re a fan of the films of Jim Henson (Farscape is a Henson production that features a lot of Muppet-like aliens and creatures) you owe it to yourself to give this a shot.

All right. Here we go again. This isn’t the massive holiday sale that Amazon usually kicks off every November or so, where most Criterion titles are discounted by around 50%. This is just another one of those times that the online e-tailer has drastically cut the prices on a handful of titles. And this time around, they’ve put a lot of this year’s best discs on sale.

Everything you see below is on sale for around $20, give or take a dollar. Click on the Blu-ray disc covers to hop over to the corresponding Amazon page and make your purchase!

UPDATE: I’ve just been informed by Ryan over at the super-awesome you’re-not-a-real-movie-nerd-if-you-don’t-listen-to-it Criterion Cast that Amazon has had these titles priced low for a while now. My bad. But hey, they’re all still fantastic deals at those prices, right?

After a slight bit of controversy which saw prices bopping up and down, Amazon.com has finally settled on their Blu-ray Deal of the Week. You have until this Saturday night to pick up the first three seasons of The Twilight Zone on Blu-ray for $46.49 each, a discount of 54%! While the price still seems a bit steep on the surface, consider that each set normally retails for around $100 and provides 5 discs (4 in the case of the Season 2 set) packed with brilliantly restored episodes available for the first time in HD along with a shit-ton of bonus content. This is the lowest price any of these boxed sets have seen as yet so grab them up while you still can! ...Continued...

It’s not every morning that I crawl out of bed, log into my laptop and promptly spend a couple hundred dollars. This has been one such rare morning. And I blame Amazon.com and Criterion for my empty wallet. The online retailer has discounted a crapload of Criterion Blu-ray titles this morning with no clue offered as to how long the sale will last. If you’re a fanatical Collection collector, as I am, you’ll want to head over there as soon as possible to take advantage of the low prices. And when I say low, I mean, the lowest these bad boys have ever been available on Amazon, through Barnes & Noble or directly through Criterion.com, even with discount coupon codes.

Take note of the massive 58% discount on the BBS boxed set and the 59% discount on the Yojimbo/Sanjuro set. This is the cheapest these have ever been and I doubt if they’ll ever be priced any lower. In addition, Brian De Palma‘s Blow Out, which only hits shops today, is slashed to $18.99, a record low for such a high profile, brand new Criterion release. I’ve also just noticed that the MSRP for the upcoming Makioka Sisters Blu-ray is lower than usual, bringing the regular 30% discount Amazon price to only $19.99 – Not a part of the big sale but an awesome deal nonetheless.

(And yeah, that’s comedian Bill Hader shopping Criterion like a madman in the video above, as I was a short time ago, and as you might be shortly…)

UPDATE – MAY 10, 2011: Well, after a long run of almost a couple of weeks, the sale has come to an end. I’m not going to go through and update the prices on the images below but you can still click through and check out the going rate on Amazon. Ten of the discs are actually still selling for more than 50% off as I write this (Kes, Le Cercle Rouge, Broadcast News, The Red Shoes and more!)

I know, this is kind-of a rehash of an old post about a Criterion Blu-ray sale. But you know what?

THERE’S ANOTHER CRITERION BLU-RAY SALE!!!

And this time, I think Amazon is lowering their prices to compete with the Criterion Blu-ray and DVD sale at Barnes & Noble. Since I missed out the last time, I’ve been anxious for these titles to go on sale again. Today is going to cost me a lot of money. But less than if I’d bought these same titles yesterday!

Take note that Amazon has limited stock of The Third Man. The title is now officially OUT OF PRINT. So this may be your last chance to get yourself a copy.

CRITERION SALE AT AMAZON – ALL TITLES BELOW ARE $19.99 FOR A LIMITED TIME
(Click on images to buy from Amazon.com – all film description from Criterion.com)

“Pulp novelist Holly Martins travels to shadowy, postwar Vienna, only to find himself investigating the mysterious death of an old friend, black-market opportunist Harry Lime—and thus begins this legendary tale of love, deception, and murder. Thanks to brilliant performances by Joseph Cotten, Alida Valli, and Orson Welles; Anton Karas’s evocative zither score; Graham Greene’s razor-sharp dialogue; and Robert Krasker’s dramatic use of light and shadow, The Third Man, directed by the inimitable Carol Reed, only grows in stature as the years pass.”

“The Man Who Fell to Earth is a daring exploration of science fiction as an art form. The story of an alien on an elaborate rescue mission provides the launching pad for Nicolas Roeg’s visual tour de force, a formally adventurous examination of alienation in contemporary life. Rock legend David Bowie, in his acting debut, completely embodies the title role, while Candy Clark, Buck Henry, and Rip Torn turn in pitch-perfect supporting performances. The film’s hallucinatory vision was obscured in the American theatrical release, which deleted nearly twenty minutes of crucial scenes and details. The Criterion Collection is proud to present Roeg’s full uncut version, in this exclusive new director-approved high- definition widescreen transfer.”

A graphic portrayal of insatiable sexual desire, Oshima’s film, set in 1936 and based on a true incident, depicts a man and a woman (Tatsuya Fuji and Eiko Matsuda) consumed by a transcendent, destructive love while living in an era of ever escalating imperialism and governmental control. Less a work of pornography than of politics, In the Realm of the Senses is a brave, taboo-breaking milestone.”

Told through the eyes of Truffaut’s life-long cinematic counterpart, Antoine Doinel (Jean-Pierre Léaud), The 400 Blows sensitively re-creates the trials of Truffaut’s own difficult childhood, unsentimentally portraying aloof parents, oppressive teachers, petty crime, and a friendship that would last a lifetime. The film marks Truffaut’s passage from leading critic of the French New Wave to his emergence as one of Europe’s most brilliant auteurs.”

Yet the power and scope of the film was, and remains, undeniable—the life of Emperor Pu Yi, who took the throne at age three, in 1908, before witnessing decades of cultural and political upheaval, within and without the walls of the Forbidden City. Recreating Ching dynasty China with astonishing detail and unparalleled craftsmanship by cinematographer Vittorio Storaro and production designer Ferdinando Scarfiotti, The Last Emperor is also an intimate character study of one man reconciling personal responsibility and political legacy.”

Written by radical master of the New Novel Alain Robbe-Grillet, this surreal fever dream, or nightmare, gorgeously fuses the past with the present in telling its ambiguous tale of a man and a woman (Giorgio Albertazzi and Delphine Seyrig) who may or may not have met a year ago, perhaps at the very same cathedral-like, mirror-filled château they now find themselves wandering. Unforgettable in both its confounding details (gilded ceilings, diabolical parlor games, a loaded gun) and haunting scope, Resnais’ investigation into the nature of memory is disturbing, romantic, and maybe even a ghost story.”

It’s a story that happens every day, but until Gregory Nava’s groundbreaking El Norte (The North), the personal travails of immigrants crossing the border to America had never been shown in the movies with such urgent humanism. A work of social realism imbued with dreamlike imagery, El Norte is a lovingly rendered, heartbreaking story of hope and survival, which critic Roger Ebert called “a Grapes of Wrath for our time.”

Best friends Anthony (Luke Wilson), Dignan (Owen Wilson), and Bob (Robert Musgrave) stage a wildly complex, mildly successful robbery of a small bookstore, then go “on the lam.” During their adventures, Anthony falls in love with a South American housekeeper, Inez (Lumi Cavazos), and they befriend local thief extraordinaire Mr. Henry (James Caan). Bottle Rocket is a charming, hilarious, affectionate look at the folly of dreamers, shot against radiant southwestern backdrops, and the film that put Anderson and the Wilson brothers on the map.”

Against all odds—a Jewish theater manager in hiding; a leading man who’s in the Resistance; increasingly restrictive Nazi oversight—the troupe believes the show must go on. Equal parts romance, historical tragedy, and even comedy, The Last Metro (Le dernier métro) is Truffaut’s ultimate tribute to art overcoming adversity.”
