THE WOLF OF WALL STREET
(2013, Blu-ray released March 25, 2014 – MSRP $26.98)

THE FILM:

Revered filmmaker Martin Scorsese directs the story of New York stockbroker Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio). From the American dream to corporate greed, Belfort goes from penny stocks and righteousness to IPOs and a life of corruption in the late 80s. Excess success and affluence in his early twenties as founder of the brokerage firm Stratton Oakmont warranted Belfort the title – “The Wolf of Wall Street.”

Sex. Money. Power. Drugs. Brace yourself for an outrageous true story from legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese. Leonardo DiCaprio stars as a young stockbroker hungry for a life of non-stop thrills where corruption was king and more was never enough. His rise to power earned him the title The Wolf of Wall Street. Together Scorsese and DiCaprio deliver a story of American excess.

REVIEW:

Scorsese does it again! The Wolf of Wall Street might feel like an overlong celebration of depravity but the master filmmaker imbues every frame with a biting criticism of the more bacchanalian aspects of our modern culture of excess. DiCaprio is captivating but, for my money, works a little too hard to channel his inner Ray Liotta – not only does the film often echo Goodfellas but DiCaprios performance feels directly lifted from that film, at times. But what that tells you is there’s an energy to the storytelling. Sure, Scorsese could’ve cut about 20-minutes from the film, but why rob his audience of all that fun!

The Blu-ray from Paramount is technically stellar (don’t trust the screencaps below, which over-compressed for some reason.) The image is detailed and colourful, with a warmth that accentuates the tight black levels. The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track is also a winner, with solid center and surrounds and killer replication of the music heavy soundtrack. The disc only loses points for the unfortunately slim collection of bonus features – there’s a short 17-minute long featurette on the making of the film and nothing more.
