THE CABIN IN THE WOODS
(2012, Blu-ray released September 18, 2012 – MSRP $39.99)

THE FILM:

A rambunctious group of five college friends steal away for a weekend of debauchery in an isolated country cabin, only to be attacked by horrific supernatural creatures in a night of endless terror and bloodshed. Sound familiar? Just wait. As the teens begin to exhibit standard horror-movie behavior, a group of technicians in a control room are scrutinizing, and sometimes even controlling, every move the terrified kids make! With their efforts continually thwarted by the all-powerful “eye in the sky,” do they have any chance of escape?

WHO SHOULD BUY:

Oh man, if you’re a horror movie fan and haven’t checked out The Cabin in the Woods yet, please just skip everything I’m about to write and please do not watch the trailer below and please, just pick up a copy of this film, sit back and enjoy. Trust me, this one is made for you.

Damn near everything about this film is right on the money. It’s just scary enough, just funny enough and has just enough to say about the genre that you could say it’s a perfect film. But I’m not going to actually go that far. I would say that it’s a perfectly executed gag film. Yeah, that seems about right! The twist is set up and played out so well that any issues you might have with the acting, photography, music or the like will wash away as soon the… well, I don’t want to give it away. It’s so good! I can’t wait until you see it!

THE BLU-RAY DISC:

Not only is the film great but the Canadian edition of the Blu-ray from Alliance is equally exemplary! You might not care to use it as a demo disc though, as much of the visual presentation is intentionally dark and bathed in mist (and blood!) The Blu-ray is, however, a great representation of the film, with nary a sign of digital noise, macroblocking or other tomfoolery to be found. As solid as the video is here, the audio is going to sneak up and scare the living bejeesus out of you! Straight ahead and unassuming at first, the DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 track is bombastic, dynamic and wonderfully immersive. Great stuff!

Special features are just plentiful enough to please. Not only does the disc offer up a pretty zesty commentary track featuring the witty banter of writer/director Drew Goddard and writer/producer Joss Whedon but it also packs a full, running PIP “Bonus View Mode” throughout the film. It’s everything a nerd could want. Don’t forget to also check out the half-hour long “making of” doc, the nearly half-hour “Wonder-Con Q&A” with Goddard and Whedon (also funny) and the multitude of featurettes on this excellent disc.

Recommended!
