Comic-Con Episode Four: A Fan’s Hope Blu-ray Disc Review

(2012, Blu-ray released July 10, 2012 – MSRP CDN$ 32.99)

Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan’s Hope–a film by Morgan Spurlock explores this amazing cultural phenomenon by following the lives of five attendees as they descend upon the ultimate geek mecca at San Diego Comic-Con 2010. One on one interviews with Comic-Con veterans who have turned their passions into professions include Stan Lee, Joss Whedon, Frank Miller, Kevin Smith, Matt Groening, Seth Rogen, Eli Roth and others are shared throughout the film along with up close and up front coverage of all the panels, parades, photos, costumes, crowds and camaraderie that make up one of the largest fan gatherings in the U.S.

Anyone looking for another Spurlock-centric doc is going to be dissapointed with the director’s latest effort, Comic-Con Episode Four: A Fan’s Hope as the infamous super-sized fast-food consumer doesn’t even appear in a single frame of the film. But I have a feeling that the target market for this movie is a little different than his previous work. Comic book and sci-fi fans who’ve been unable to make their way down to San Diego for the annual pilgrimage to nerd-Mecca will no doubt be delighted by Spurlock’s somewhat cursory documentation of the festival. But the history of the Con and the examination of what it’s become in the years since it’s inception take a back seat here to the stories of several different types of fans and how and why they find themselves at the SDCC. You’re not going to learn as much about Comic Con as you will about the folks who love to attend it but any fan of genre material will no doubt have a good time with Spurlock’s latest opus.

Comic-Con Episode Four: A Fan’s Hope comes to Blu-ray in another Canadian exclusive release from eOne. All things considered, it looks pretty good! Shot on HD, the deficiencies of the image are most likely a result of the manner in which the footage was gathered and shot. Audio is presented in a surprisingly active 5.1 DTS-HD MA track that won’t rattle your china with low-end presence, but provides a solid, clear and clean center dialogue channel of the variety you demand from documentary material like this.

Special features are few but fantastic. Deleted scenes flesh out the stories of the various fan’s struggling to make their way to and succeed in their goals at Comic Con while the 6-minute long ‘behind the scenes’ featurette provides a few words from Spurlock on his drive to make the film. The real treat, however, is over an hours-worth of interview material with the likes of Grant Morrison, Joss Whedon, Kevin Smith and more! Comic and movie fans won’t want to skip this bonus goodie, that’s for sure!
