The reboot of the Conan franchise, based on the Robert E. Howard books, played out exactly as I was expecting, with exploitative, unbalanced filmmaking and stars unable to match the presence or charisma of the original cast, which included Arnold Schwarzenegger, James Earl Jones and Max von Sydow. The new Conan: The Barbarian is not unlike an angrier, big-budget version of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. It’s not the worst sword and sorcery film I’ve ever seen but it doesn’t compare favourably to the iconic power of John Milius‘ original 1982 adaptation. That said, I’m sorry, but not surprised it wasn’t a strong performer at the box office. But I’ll be happy to give it another shot on Blu-ray. The discs, both 3D combo pack and regular, old BD, will be in shops on November 22nd.
