The Lion King and Lion King Trilogy Blu-ray boxed set available for pre-order

I’ve never been a big fan of The Lion King, myself. I always felt that the film was something of a turning point for the Eisner Disney regime – the point at which they found a formula for success and realized they could just run with it, churning out mindless song-factory princess pablum for the following decade or so. In addition, I was aware from the get-go that the film was using a lot of Osamu Tezuka‘s Kimba The White Lion stories, images and concepts without crediting the source material which, as an anime fan, really cheesed me off. But there’s no denying that the film has become a Disney classic and therefore worthy of the Diamond Edition Blu-ray treatment.

Disc details have yet to be officially announced by the studio but Amazon has put three Blu-ray versions of the film up for pre-order today – a 2-disc Blu-ray/DVD combo pack (MSRP: $39.99), a 4-disc combo pack (MSRP: $49.99) that ups the ante with a converted 3D version of the film as well as a digital copy and a Lion King Trilogy 8-disc combo pack (MSRP: $100.00) including the contents of the 3D combo pack as well as a Blu-ray and DVD each for those straight-to-video sensations, The Lion King 1 1/2 and The Lion King 2.

I’ll update the post with further details when the official announcement is made.
