James Cameron's Avatar Blu-ray Preview, Release date

All right. I guess I’ve been avoiding a couple of things on the blog lately. Specifically, I haven’t posted any of the multitude of rumours about James Cameron‘s epic hit film, Avatar coming to Blu-ray. And I’ve also been avoiding the whole 3D thing. While the two topics seem to be intrinsically attached, I’m going to try to focus on Avatar alone today. I’ve got so much to say about this whole 3D-in-the-home business that I think it warrants its own article.

Avatar UK Blu-ray

So, let’s start with this weeks revelation – package art and release date. It seems that UK retail sources have received the above image of the Avatar special edition “Steelbook” package art along with a release date that will see the 2D edition of the Blu-ray hitting the streets around Earth Day, April 22nd. Now, there’s no debating that this is a real package shot. It might not end up looking exactly like this over here in North America but this appears to be pretty solid. I kind of have a hard time believing that Avatar will be released in April while it’s still doing really well in theatres! But this does line up with the date that James Cameron himself leaked a couple of weeks ago. For the record, Cameron has also claimed that we’ll be getting a 3D edition of the Blu-ray in November. A Fox spokesman has stated otherwise. So, either way, if it’s the 3D version of the Blu-ray you’re after (and it most likely isn’t, as I doubt anyone actually owns a 3D display or player at this point) you better be prepared to wait a little while longer.

Cameron has also revealed that the early release 2D edition of Avatar on home video will be a more bare-bones affair but will include over 10-minutes of deleted scenes (including the heavily reported CGI sex scene between the blue, digital versions of actors Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana) that will shed more light on the Na’vi people of Pandora. In an interview with MTV, he said, “It’s all wonderful stuff, but it was sort of bogging down the middle section of the movie…So there’s plenty for a value-added DVD experience on this film. Of course, we’ll have to go punch it all up and get it all mixed and stuff like that.”

Keep in mind that without an official announcement from Fox, all information regarding an Avatar Blu-ray release must be considered a rumour. We hope to hear something official very soon!

  1. My Local Best Buy already has Samsung’s 3D LED, plus Sony’s 3D BD Players. And a Panasonic rep told me all of their 3D equipment will be instores by the end of March. 3D is here, though its expensive. It will start high-end, but eventually I think it will trickle down to mid-range HD Products.

  3. my question is why do we need blue “3D players & TV’s” I mean can’t they just mix the 2 images together like its done in the theater and use the same glasses with your existing player & TV ??
What am I missing… is it too much info to put on a blueray disc?
