Well, will you look at that. Seems my country is on a role this year, finally doing something noteworthy online! The National Film Board of Canada (or NFB if you live around these here parts, ONF if you speak French) has had a great year, getting thousands of their films up online for viewing through their site and their awesome iPhone app. And today, they’ve proudly ventured into the land of HD.
Head over to http://nfb.ca/hd and see for yourself! While I’m extremely pleased with their efforts, the results are pretty uneven at the moment. And I’m not referring to the content itself when I say that. I’m talking about the encoding of the films for HD streaming. The results range from the unadulterated HD awesomeness of Chris Landreth’s animated Ryan to the aliased, over-compressed mess of Lodela, a black and white dance piece by Philippe Baylaucq. Here’s hoping they get their process sorted out sooner rather than later. I’d love to see more NFB in HD!
My suggestion to them? Lay off the lame 3D gimmick (Get with the program guys! 3D might be all the rage at the moment but nobody wants to wear those old blue/red anaglyph glasses anymore. Circular polarized or active LCD shutter tech is where it’s at!) and mine the HD content already at their fingertips. Give us more of the beautiful animated shorts from the Animation Express Blu-ray. Like the beautiful, Oscar nominated Madame Tutli-Putli, the creation of animators Chris Lavis and Maciek Szczerbowski, embedded above for your viewing pleasure.

[...] Yeah! We’ve finally got some details about Chris Lavis and Maciek Szczerbowski’s animated short Higglety Pigglety Pop! or There Must Be More to Life, which will appear exclusively on the Where The WIld Things Are Blu-ray, to be released on March 2nd (as we reported in our previously article.) You can read the press release for yourself below but if you have any doubt about the skills of these animators just check out their previous film, the Oscar nominated Madame Tutli Putli embedded above for your viewing pleasure (and currently available on both the Animation Express Blu-ray and streaming on the NFB’s HD site).
