No Blu-ray Drive for XBox 360, despite what Microsoft CEO says

Did you see this video? This interview with Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer? He appears to be saying that you Xbox 360 owners are going to be getting a Blu-ray drive accessory some time in the near future. Seemed suspicious to me. I didn’t believe it for a moment. And now my suspicions have been born out. Apparently Steve made a slip of the tongue, or was a little obtuse or just led us astray with his poorly worded comments – Microsoft now confirms that there will be no Blu-ray on the Xbox.

Gizmodo posted the interview with Ballmer last week and the internet nerderati lit up with cries of hurrah or foul or meh. Seems like a lot of people have been awaiting a Blu-ray drive accessory on the 360 for quite some time. Well, no sooner had the video seen a thousand plays than Microsoft had issued a statement claiming that their CEO had been mistaken:

“Steve was referring to Blu-ray accessories for the PC. As we have said in the past, we have no plans to introduce a Blu-ray drive for the Xbox 360. In fact, the future of home entertainment starts this fall when Xbox 360 becomes the first and only console to offer instant-on 1080p streaming HD movies. With a library of thousands of TV shows and movies to choose from, Xbox 360 owners can instantly watch the movies they want, when they want, in the highest form of high definition.”

Hey, you know what? The PS3 has a Blu-ray drive! Why not run out and buy one of those instead?!
