This is some of the most exciting, unexpected news I’ve read in ages. Lionsgate has announced that they’re bringing the classic 80s film, The Monster Squad to Blu-ray on November 24th. While I’ve never been in love with the film itself, I’m such a crazy fan of the classic Universal monsters that I’ll happily watch any film that features them (or non-licensed facsimiles of them, in this case) teaming up to wreak havoc on unsuspecting innocents. Don’t get me wrong, this is a super fun film! And I can’t wait to check it out on Blu-ray. It just pales in comparison to the true, classic monster films – Lugosi in Dracula, Karloff in Frankenstein and The Mummy, Lon Chaney Jr. in The Wolfman – which, in my opinion, rule the world and can’t come to Blu-ray soon enough.
From all appearances, this 20th Anniversary Edition seems to be an exact copy of the previously available DVD, at least in the special features department. That’s not a bad thing! The DVD had a nice commentary track a fairly comprehensive documentary. I’m anxious to see how this transfer looks in high-def! Here’s hoping it stands up. Thank you Lionsgate!
