This is Spinal Tap is required viewing for any musician. In fact, it’s like a touring musician’s handbook: The Dangers of Being on the Road 101. It’s easy to imagine when watching the film that everything on screen is quite fantastical and could never exist in the real world. I’m here to tell you that Spinal Tap is funny because it’s so close to reality. Musicians may not find themselves with a cucumber down their trousers or miniature Stonehenge monument on stage but every band has had a Tap moment or two on every tour.
I truly love this film. I lament the fact that no version of Spinal Tap on home video will ever be definitive (MGM releases will never have the Criterion content, produced for Laserdisc and released on their long out-of-print DVD) but remain ecstatic that I’ll be able to “Smell The Glove” in delicious 1080p this July!
