Blu-ray Picks for the Week of Jan. 20

King Kong

Pick Peter Jackson’s King Kong on Blu-ray this week

Here we go again! I meant to get a big head start on putting this list together last week but, well, you know how things go. Here I am, shortly before I need to get some recommendations out to you, finally scouring the lists of Blu-ray discs that will be hitting the store shelves tomorrow. So, to get things happening and to make sure you don’t go off half cocked and buy 3 copies of Max Payne without knowing your alternatives, I’m going to write little and post mainly images. Feel free to grouse. I’ll endeavour to type more next week. All titles and images are clickable and will zap you over to the corresponding Amazon page which will provide you with a lot more detail about the title and the opportunity to purchase it. In doing so, you’ll be helping to support the ongoing existence of The Blu-ray Blog and this Picks column in particular.

WEEK OF JANUARY 20TH

Peter Jackson’s King Kong finally makes it to Blu-ray disc this week. I’m recommending it as my pick of the week because I enjoy the film so much and because it looks fantastic on the format. The recommend comes with a MAJOR reservation, however - this release is desperately anaemic in the extras department. Where the original DVD was replete with documentaries and featurettes, all you’ll find here is a commentary and a PIP track that incorporates SOME of what you’re missing out on.

Great demo disc - Hold onto your old Special Edition DVD for the complete experience!

It’s another Criterion Blu-ray! This is the title I’m most excited about this week but as I haven’t seen it yet I decided to place it a bit lower down the list of my recommendations. Also, I’m starting to feel like a Criterion shill.

El Norte literally means ‘The North’ and is director Gregory Nava’s tale of flight from persecution at home in Guatemala to the United States and the dream of starting a new life. Director approved and rich with features, like every Criterion release, I feel certain that El Norte is a sure bet. I’ll be hitting Metro Video downtown straight after I finish work today in hopes that they were able to get a few copies for their shelves.

Prepare for Valentines Day with this box set of The Notebook. From Amazon, this box “includes an exquisite 46-Page photo and scrapbook album, decorative stickers and photo corners to add your own photos. Also, two themed bookmarks and a set of 16 notecards and envelopes.
