Kurosawa Blu-ray Box from Criterion?

Samurai Prepared to Die with Honour for Blu-ray

The word on the street today is that Criterion may be preparing to release several of Akira Kurosawa‘s classic films on Blu-ray. While this won’t come as much of a shock to fans of the high-end indie label, the timing may be. Blu-ray.com reports,

“The ‘Akira Kurosawa Blu-ray Box (Limited Edition)’ is coming to Japan on February 6th, and it will feature four of the legendary directors best known films, including ‘Rashomon’, ‘Ran’, ‘Madadayo’, and ‘The Quiet Duel (Shizukanaru Ketto)’ in stunning high definition. For the four-disc set, video will be presented in 1080p and accompanied by a mono PCM Japanese soundtrack.”

What they happen to have left out is the fact that the masters for these Blu-rays come care of Criterion! Their domestic release will no doubt come hot on the heels of the Japanese discs. Keep your fingers crossed!
