Confirmed: PS3 will play Pioneer's 400gb Blu-ray Discs

400gb Blu-Ray

400gb Blu-ray Discs in your PS3 = More Hours of Metal Gear Solid Cut Scenes!

Just when you thought disc capacity had hit a ceiling, along comes Pioneer to prove you wrong. It was only a week ago that the multinational corporation based out of Tokyo, Japan announced that they had developed a 16 layer Blu-ray disc capable of storing 400gb of data – approximately eight times the capacity of the current top of the line dual layer disc commonly used to store feature length films. While 50gb seems sufficient for Hollywood’s standards, the new 400gb Blu-ray opens up the possibility of housing full film and TV series on a single disc, saving the consumer money and precious shelf space. The big question out of the gate is compatibility – would these new discs play in our existing Blu-ray decks?
The answer is a resounding YES, at least insofar as the Playstation 3 is concerned. What the PS3s compatibility suggests, however, is that any playback issues wouldn’t exist in currently available hardware. Perhaps a firmware update will render the majority of players able to read Pioneer’s 400gb discs? Perhaps we’ll all be able to enjoy all 6 Star Wars films from a single disc in the near future?
